Can someone tell me what does it mean to be "wax nostalgic" about something. I never heard of that before. Does it mean to be sad? It's my new fav phrase if it means to be sad. |

nostalgia generally has a positive connotation, but it can be used to deride someones penchant for living in the past as well.
but, in this instance, wax is used in the same way the phase of the moon can wax or wane, meaning to increase, so the phrase in this case is to have an increase in the feeling of nostalgia. some might call it overcome by nostalgia (hinting at a negative connotation).
when i hear or read it, i picture an elder british gentleman puffing on a pipe reminiscing about the british empire and old wars with a group of younger people gathered around him, some rolling their eyes, others (less jaded) rapt, and still others wanting to argue. there's a bit of pompousness to the phrase, some dust, and hints of past or impending death.
it's also a poor literary technique when used to relax the audience after the climax of a movie or book.
