Encrypt a laptop

I travel with my laptop and I have client data on it. I do have the hard drive password protected. But I do not know how to encrypt the data on my laptop. Is there software that does the encryption or is there something in Windows XP Pro?

I use TrueCrypt. I'm pretty happy with it.

You don't mention how much data you need to encrypt. A few files, a few folders or a substantial amount of stuff. IMO, the method you choose should take that into consideration.

XP Pro has a version of encryption built into it. A good, detailed guide can be found here »www.practicalpc.co.uk/computing/···ypt1.htm The section on backing up your encryption key cannot be understated. If you decide to go this route, don't forget to do it!

There are also several good, free, 3rd party applications that can also do the job. Feets noted TrueCrypt which IMO is an excellent container type encryption program best suited to larger needs. Others I have also used and like are AxCrypt (files or folders), EncryptOnClick (files or folders) and dsCrypt (files only.)

I would advocate that you might want to do some research to learn which would best suit your needs.

AxCrypt »axcrypt.axantum.com/
EncryptOnClick »www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/f···hub.html
dsCrypt »members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv···reeware/

On my laptop, I use the PGP 9.0.x Whole Disk Encryption. It encrypts everything on the hard disk except for the sectors with the MBR and the PGP boot loader.

I've been using Steganos Security Suite 5 for the past several years to encrypt data on the traveling laptop. A little old, but I see no need to update to the current version as 5 is sufficient for my current needs.
