Is there DSL in most of Austin proper?

How much of Austin, TX has DSL coverage? What providers are there? What are the going rates? What about fiber, is it there or is it coming?

You might find these two on-site features helpful:

»/psearch

They might help you to narrow the scope of your questions...or not.
But its a good place to start.

Hmmmm...well Austin is a fairly wired city.
Cable and DSL are readily available.
AT&T has fiber throughout most of the city, but I am unaware how much glass is actually lit.

BTW: Zip codes to plug in: 78701 thru 78799

Ah. I just saw the thing about AT&T using politics to try and force the state government's hand. Sucks.

OT:

This is why I think we need a national county owned fiber to the home initiative. The local counties or parishes contract to have the lines run and then pay contractors to run them, but don't allow any "telco" or "CableCo" to get involved in the line maintenance. Instead, any and all providers may pay to have the right to hook into the fiber COs and by using an ID system, instantaneously provide or block various servies via the fiber.

I think it is time to break the monopolies.

Sounds like you should avoid AT&T and any other major company then. Good luck getting broadband.

Of course alternatives are out in select markets, but from what I've experienced as far as hotspots go, the speeds usually have nothing on your average broadband line.

Don't get me wrong - WISPs are great - but in most cases they cost more for less speed.

I concur.
But the article illustrates several points germane to signmeuptoo See Profile's argument .
- alternative connectivity
- the political impact of the major players
- how the impact affects the growth of alternative niches
- how that impact is often contrary to the needs/wants of constituents
