Coffee Shop Managers != IT Monkeys

These guys simply aren't very clever. There are fairly cheap captive portal solutions that allow for "ticketing". Each customer gets a pre-printed ticket with user/pass each time food/drink is ordered. Ticket is good for 30 minutes of use. Want more internet? Buy something and you get another ticket.

The portal solutions I've seen are not cheap. Do you have a link?

Google on Zyxel and Handlink. Netopia also has a DSL modem/hotspot in a box that is included with many Covad packages, but requires a monthly fee for the radius duties.

Then there's free captive portals included in projects like pfSense and m0n0wall.

dd-wrt seems to have most of the requested featureset. Have a POS system connect to the radius server and issue IDs..

Are there solutions that ID the user's computer without a printed receipt? If so, then you could set up a limit of X minutes every Y hours. Cloning (actually spoofing, I guess) could be a problem, but I don't think most of these "abusers" are really that sophisticated. If they were, they would probably find it as easy to use someone else's Wi-Fi anyway.....
