Download jump from 4200kbps to 11000kbps!

My mother's CHSI has been pretty good for the past few years. U/L between 300 & 350kbps but the download is never over 4400 kbps. Faster than she really needs but we are considering switching to FiOS and Comcast calls this service 6000/384. I called Comcast support and was asked to bypass the router & directly connect to the modem and do a Speakeasy test. The rep acknowledged the speed was low and scheduled a tech. The tech showed up within the window, quickly tested the speed then tried a new RCA cable modem. The D/L speed tested consistently between 9 - 11,000kbps. I didn't know we were eligible to get this speed. After 6 PM the speed dropped to between 5.5 & 6 kbps. The tech volunteered he would leave our old modem because we owned it. He did not mention this would probable add $3/month. Very nice, qualified and quickly resolved our issue. He is a contractor and most of his work is for Comcast. I may even call Comcast to complement him ... and confirm the additional modem fee which will take our new promo price to about the same cost as FiOS.

A kinder, gentler Comcast ... or one well aware Verizon is here? I don't know why, but Comcast is a very different company to deal with since January, and I like it. We may still switch because FiOS is simply a superior service at the same or lower price, but, we could have switched in January and either service is more than adequate. Had Comcast treated me this way I'd still probably be a video customer and not have switched to FiOS for another 6 months.

Keep up the good work Comcast.

The old modem was a Motorola 4100. Never gave us any trouble and was a good product when new. I think the speed was 1500/128 then.

Wow! I love you dude. It's a nice break to hear from a happy customer here. I know there are thousands and thousands more of you out there, but most people don't post here unless they have something to complain about.

The Powerboost is probably kicking in for you and why you received the results you did from your speed test with the new modem. The firmware problems with the SB4100s was keeping you from enjoying it. Now that it's fixed, keep on surfin merrily!

How does Powerboost work? During low use periods, will I get full speed on large downloads if no competing traffic, or is it limiter to timed bursts? Where does the control initiate? My router has traffic shaping and I don't know how to configure this for best advantage. With the Motorola 4100, I would set my router to keep from tripping the max download speed and got smoother downloads and much better throughput.
