| reply to juniorx I have never been a fan of Windows 9Xanything or ME. I skipped that series. However, I think there are and always have been better places, including the BBR forums, for OS troubleshooting than Comcast.
I have also never had an internet connection problem which had anything to do with my computers or an OS.
If you still have computers running under one of those, try our Microsoft Help Forum. I suspect it will be a number of years before we have no members who don't remember how to help with those. And if/when that happens, you'll probably be buying new computers with a newer OS. -- Team Helix May 2006 Roll Call - Team Helix Forum - My Folding@Home Farm - Join Us? |

1 edit | There is always debate on minimum requirements for XP, but some PCs could not be upgraded or would not benefit from upgrading because of the lack of resources. Windows 2000 is a better choice. For what it's worth, I still have 3 PCs running ME with no issues. -- Write me up a 125.......I Can't Drive 55 »redrocker.com/ »cabowabo.com/ |

1 edit | reply to juniorx Beyond power cycling your modem (the magic cure all) and entering the pop server and news sever info in Outlook Express, what kind of support do they offer?
Anytime I had to deal with them if the power cycle did not fix it then it required a truck roll and if you were using any other program besides Outlook Express for mail or news groups they offered no support anyway. |

| reply to juniorx The biggest thing about most win98 and ME customers that call in is they have no NIC on the system and are using USB. USB driver install on a ME system isn't too bad but on win98 it can be a nightmare. That's the biggest part of troubleshooting for most callers with that system that will no longer be supported that normally would have been. |

not sit there with a phone to their ear listening to someone over seas saying go to control panel & open it & go to the DO Dobber & left click on the Whats Ya Ma Calls It's,then open the folder marked Thing a ma jig then ==== co incideantly phobe disconnects or your hung up on. -- I try to be friends with all, wary of a few, and will always be an enemy to some reguardless of what i do |

So whats wrong with how old the program is IF it still works good, & YOU can keep it protected,or the computer is,since most old (by todays standards) were purchased NEW with windows 98se, all they have to do is upgrade to winxp, not buy a new computer..
thats like your saying IF someones car is 1996 or older it isn't any good anymore -- I try to be friends with all, wary of a few, and will always be an enemy to some reguardless of what i do |

@direcpc.com | reply to whocares I don't think its that they're not smart, it's just that they're not responsible to fix the problem. They just have to go through a series of basic steps the company wants them to do. |

Nobody is reading from some stupid card. Geez, you really think people are on the other end reading cards. You really think that each problem coming in on the phone line is going to confuse someone who listens to the same problem over and over everyday? If the person you are talking to "sounds" like they are reading from a card, have you stopped to think they might be working thru 5 or 6 different applications/systems while speaking, and could be just a "tiny" bit distracted. It's amazing that you think someone would thumb thru books and cards on the fly to identify and correct your issue. Mind you, any place you call for tech support is going to have a few "dummies".
All I got to say to the ingrates is "If you know what the problem is, then fix it yourself, otherwise, shutup. Don't complain if YOU called someone for help with an issue YOU couldn't fix. By picking up the phone, you admit your knowledge alone cannot fix the issue, so be happy the support is a free call away.". You want to see stupid, or pointless tech support, try calling Microsoft, or Dell. Their idea of "fixing" the computer involves losing all your data, or large portions of it, by "restoring" your PC, then charging you for the call. I had a call from someone who was charged $40 by Microsoft just to be told to call McAfee for further assistance, and nothing was added, removed, or tested. I myself handle tech support calls, and the majority of the calls are spyware issues, because people can't use their PC (and because the government won't make it mandatory to have a license to use a PC). I have mistaken a few "valid" problems (although I wouldn't call them valid if the USER is the one who caused it in the first place) for ones that could have been spyware related, such as a security app locking the homepage, or no browse even with firewall disabled (expired firewalls do this sometimes). But all ego's aside, no lie, 98% of my "know it all" calls get fixed because the person didn't "know it all" or didn't "follow directions". That percentage is very accurate, and has been pretty consistent for the last 4 years. If you DO have more knowledge, then act humble, and stop tripping, because you know as well as I do that nobody is going to pay big bucks for a tier 2 internet support rep to repair call after call, as the business is geared towards INTERNET SUPPORT and not PC ISSUES. If you want free, highly trained technical support, don't hold your breath, because you won't find it in this lifetime. -- SIPPhone/Gizmo # 17476200648 / Ran by Asterisk & Slackware 10.1. |

| reply to whocares said by whocares :thats like your saying IF someones car is 1996 or older it isn't any good anymore EXACTLY! I had this same argument with my brother-in-law, he works I.S. for some big company. I was lamenting on how our I.S. department will not support Windows 98 machines, and he said thats right they should not have to support hardware more than 5 years old with an old OS.
What a bunch of crap. I asked him what if the next time he takes his car (80's Camaro) in to be repaired all the shops said they do not fix cars more than 5 years old. He looked at me like I was crazy and said that a totally different story. |

| reply to juniorx but some of the new software does not support older hardware.
I have several pieces of equipment that is essential to my employers business. There is not any drivers for the latest operating system for this equipment.
The equipment cost well over $50,000. So guess what, we will run win98 probably for a looooong time! -- "Independent thinkers tend to ALWAYS have someone not agreeing with them. It's the non-thinkers that always come in legions." -John Callari |
