 [ViaTalk] Call Transfer works!

Call Transfer does work, even though the latest news was that it was disabled... The new feature works far better than the old way, for a number of reasons.

•It works similar to 3-way calling, which I believe is how most transfer features work--no *xx codes to remember.
•You can transfer the call using 7, 10, or 11-digit dialing.
•You can "blind" transfer or "consultative" transfer, and the process is essentially the same. (The only difference is when you hang up the VT line.)
•You can transfer inbound calls or outbound calls (doesn't matter who initiated the first call).

How do you do it? Just flash the switch-hook, and dial the number you want to transfer the call to. When you're ready to transfer the call (either immediately after dialing or after the 3rd party answers), hang up the VT line. Voila, the call is transfered.

Nice!

Why not use your ATA for these features? For example, if you have a PAP2, flash then * 99 then the number will do an attended transfer. Flash then *98 then the number will do a blind transfer. I have found the ATA to be the most reliable method for using features like transfer.

I did not know about the *99/*98 feature! Thanks!
Is there a list somewhere that details any other PAP2 features?

If you log into it or get the manual for your specific model online you should be able to get more information on what codes your specific model uses.

I have the PAP2-NA model (as supplied by ViaTalk). Googling gets me lots of links to the Linksys PAP2-NA PDF manual but this manual does not mention any *NN codes. All it talks about are the * codes for the IVR feature.

Have not asked ViaTalk for my admin password yet so I can't log in to the configuration section to see what is there. Can only see the user menus.

The unattended transfer feature worked (*98), but the attended transfer on my TA (SPA-2100, BYOD) gave me a reorder tone. I can double-check, but I don't believe I disabled that feature in my TA when I programmed in the VT creds.

To see a list of features on the PAP2, click on this link, then click on "Regional"

What is an attended transfer, blind transfer?

I'm wondering if this is possible before I go out and purchase a new phone system with intercom. I have a 2 story house and spend quite a bit of time upstairs, could I use the call transfer or something similar as some sort of intercom? Tried calling my own number but of course that doesn't work.

you don't have to buy a telephone system to make an intercom in the house. The Nuvio nPBX system, typically sold to businesses, will do intercom when used with the Polycom IP 501 phone sets. Each phone would have its own VM and internal extension number. The phones are roughly $220 each to purchase, and the monthly subscription is roughly $45/month per phone. It's priced appropriate for business (and has many business features such as auto attendant), and might not be appropriate for your needs especially if you have lots of phones (each phone would have to plug in to a network connection and electricity), but internal intercom can be done with VOIP...

Is this the way it is now supposed to work, or is this just using functionality of the 3-way calling as a work-a-round? The ViaTalk website says you hit ##, then the phone number (which last time I tried did not work). I submitted a ticket on this and was told that this feature and Call Recording are currently disabled.

Blind transfer is when someone calls you, you put them on hold, dial the number to which you're transferring them, and immediately transfer the call. Typically the person being transferred then hears the ringback from the new call. If the line is busy or the person isn't there, the original caller would have to deal with the consequences (leave message or hang up).

An attended transfer is when you put a caller on hold, dial the number you're transferring them to, and wait for the call to be answered. Typically, you'll say to the person who answers, "I'm transferring a call to you." When you release the line, the holding party is connected to the "new" call. In this case, if the line is busy or you get dumped to voicemail, you'd return to the original call and disconnect the second call.

RockBB thanks, but way beyond my needs . Was thinking walkie talkie( but then I'd have another device on my desk), or get a set of those panasonics or unidens with built in intercom.

Fisamo, damn good explanation, very thorough thanks.

Dumb question. With *98 and *99 how do you tell it where to transfer to?

I don't recall if you get a dialtone right after dialing the *98 or *99 code. In any case, you dial the number you're transferring the call to just after dialing the *98 or *99 code.

I have the PAP2T ATA and I cannot get the *98 code to work. It is provisioned with VT. Could that be the problem? *99 is not associated with transfer at all in my ATA (it is a Modem Line Toggle option). I do not see an option for an attended tranfer in the ATA.

I can use the 3-way calling functionality to do both a blind and attended transfer. Just want to see if, being provisioned, this can also be done with codes as well. Anyone have success with using codes as a provisioned customer?

I'm on BYOD, and the * codes don't work for me, either. Someone else mentioned using those codes that are built into the TA. I got reorder tone when trying it on mine just now.

Hmm - it looks like ViaTalk has taken call transfer and call recording off of their feature list. Any comment Brendan? Can we expect these features back or are they gone for good?

They still have Call Recording listed in the flash slide that shows the various features on the main page. I didn't wait long enough to see if transfer would scroll on by...

I do hope the transfer comes back. And the recording would be good for those that actually need it.

The call transfer and call recording were actually features that helped me decide on going with ViaTalk as they are features I would like to use. Perhaps they took them off the main site for the time being as they are not currently available. Smart move IMO.

What I think is always helpful is to have a list of those features that are planned and in the works. There was actually a bit of excitement around the VT service when VT was posting their latest round of features for the near future. Gave us a chance to discuss the potential uses of the features. VTinside.com could be utilized more in that area.

I have already suggested to VT that new features be posted as beta with the ability to provide feedback on the functionality as well as any bugs that might exist. This could be done through the CP, separate from the normal ticket system. VT would then have time to work on improvements to the new features...based on the recommendations of the user base...and get some good, solid, functional features that will keep them in the forefront of the rest of the providers out there.

One thing seems clear. The people at VT seem to be the biggest tech geeks in the business. Makes for a fun and exciting future in VOIP.
