| U-verse node in Milwaukee area?
OK, it's actually in Shorewood on the 4000 block of N Stowell Ave, just north of Capitol Drive. The photo is looking south on Stowell to the intersection with Capitol.
The sidewalk is marked "AT&T FO" and the cabinet sits in the right-of-way. The fiber runs from a manhole on Capitol Drive, past the cabinet, and the markings (apparently not FO) continue N-NE to a pole in the alley between Stowell and Downer Ave. I didn't check to see what was up on the pole.
This is just a bit more than 1/2 mile from MILWWI22 at 1830 E Capitol Drive.
I took video from all sides if anyone wants more, but there's not much to see.
Speculation is invited, knowledge welcome. Thanks. -- USNG: 16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder

| reply to ArgMeMatey My Gawd! That thing is huge! I wonder how long it will be before it gets "tagged"? Couldn't they put it underground?
I've heard that these things are noisy too, because they have built-in cooling systems. Does anyone else know much about these big boxes? |

Regarding the aesthetic issues, it looks like this issue is dead center on the radar of Wisconsin municipalities. Additionally this 31 May 2006 newsletter has two other articles related to AT&T's efforts: »www.wiscities.org/newsletter.htm
Also I thought this was for FTTH but apparently I haven't been reading things too carefully, because as you probably know this is for FTTN. I'd like to blame it on the heat, but really, I'm just a caveman. Your technology confuses me. -- USNG:16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder |

| reply to ArgMeMatey I seem to be walking away scratching my head more and more with u-verse/lightspeed implementation.
Why is ATT putting up these boxes where everyone is fighting it?
Don't they talk with any of these townships before hand? -- "Action does not equal Achievement" |

If they've got a better offer from a neighbor, tell them you want landscaping, an attached playhouse or potting shed to screen it, driveway plowing and a reasonable rent with inflation clause. That way, it could be a selling point when you move, as long as people wouldn't mind potential tech visits at all times of the day.
For something this size, they should be negotiating leases like the cellular carriers do, not using perceived monopoly power to put stuff whereever they want.
They would love to start up in the most densely-populated municipality in Wisconsin but the catch is that retrofitting with small lots and aerial utilities in backyards is going to be a tough sell. -- USNG:16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder |

 a little perspective |
Here is another picture I found of these boxes. I think they are called 52-B's or something like that. |

| reply to Paulg said by Paulg :Perhaps its illegal because its too close to the road? I have a feeling a snowplow would destroy that thing in no time in the winter.. I believe the "illegality" has more to do with it being in effect cable TV equipment and not just telecommunications equipment. The village wants a franchise agreement before any more of these appear.
I agree that at the very least salt spray could be an issue, however the right-of-way on most streets here is too narrow for any other placement. For example at my house the ROW is 70' wide or 35' on either side of the street center line.
15' Street 10' Curb & grass boulevard 6' Sidewalk 4' Grass to my property line ----- 35'
So without dealing with me, moving the sidewalk or going underground they have nowhere else to go. -- USNG:16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder |

Paulg Formerly Arctic Wolf Premium join:2004-03-15 Hubbell, MI clubs: | reply to StillLearn I know that, but from my view, it still looks like a snowplow would either destroy that, or it would give the village a real headache trying to plow around it -- I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponant. |
