[Cable TV] DVR issue

Here's an interesting issue, maybe Mac, cnd007 or Realtech might have some more insight.

We have a customer in one of our areas with 3 SA Explorer 8000's in their house. They have had the DVR service for nearly 2 years now with virtually no problems.

A month and a half ago, they started having issues, wherein, while watching a recorded show sometimes it will freeze up and cause the box to reboot.

Other times, they change from the DVR channel to a regular station and once they turn back, the screen goes black, the box locks up, then after about 3-5 minutes, it reboots. It will do this numerous times every day at any time.

My boxes have done this from time to time, but usually only once every couple of months, and usually only one time.

We have been out 6 times since the issue started. The boxes have been replaced at least twice, there is no noise from the drop or from inside the house, signal levels are good, all wiring is good RG-6, the boxes all have IP's, no corrective bytes and good SNR/MER, and maintenence have checked the feeder from the node and it checks out good.

Data center doesn't have a clue(big surprise), and neither does SA's troubleshooting desk.

Any ideas?

We've had problems like that recently since the newest driver updates for them. From what a data ctr rep told a fellow tech, that there were quite a few problems that arose out of this last update. I'm not sure if that's what effecting you guys or not.

Although I have not seen the issue you have described, I wonder if this advice might help?
I have seen customers record on the 'all season' choice -and- they use the 'record this show any time of day' choice -and- they do this for several shows...
Law and Order is a great example, it is on several times a day on any given channel....
This 'any time' feature was the final decision on an on going problem for a local customer of ours of whom we had visited more times than any of us could count.
As I recall, her box regularly rebooted and locked up - but it did not have anything specifically to do with the local channels as you described. The main problem was... it would only record about 7 min of many hour long shows. When I manually changed all of her shows to specific time frames, the problem did go away as far as I am aware.

Since then, I am not a fan of the any time of day feature.

In this area, we have experienced small common problems that seem to be associated with updates to the box. They have not been identical to your specific scenario - many times it has been a sound issue or the boxes were reverting from sd to hd (or hd to sd) on their own. These problem have long since been solved.

A while back I had this problem with my box. It seemed that when it would happen it was almost as if I was overworking the box. It would freeze for around 30 seconds and then all of the sudden shoot through the channels I had changed and then shut itself off. Once it was off, getting it to turn back on was another chore. The box would often be warm to touch, not painful or anything. Once the box had cooled itself down, it would turn on instantly. I called in and the only option I had was to swap the box out, but I was moving soon and it did not happen very often.

Not sure if my issue is the same. But that was my experience. It would honestly only happen maybe once a month.

That was the only possible solution we came up with. There was a software update recently, but no one is sure as to when.

Actually, today, we had another tech come in from a customer's house tht we had been to now a third time for the same issue. They also have an 8000. I wonder if the 8300 might resolve this? If so, it can take care of the one customer, but unfortunately, the 8300's aren't available to the other one.

June 14th they finished Upgradeing the box's in my Area. It's nice having the RCA jacks enabled now.

Are those the input or output RCA's? Our outputs have always been active.

The last update enabled the RCA jacks on the front of the SA boxes as well as added a 4th level of fast forward on playback of recorded programs.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the regular 8000's. I didn't realize you were talking about the 8300's.

That fourth level of FF kicks a$$. You're through your commercials in less than 5 seconds.
