said by »www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.···33861268 :

Intel has lifted the wraps on their Core 2 Duo CPU, and boy does it ever impress. Consider that a $220 Core 2 Duo E6400 runing at 2.13GHz keeps pace with a $1000 Athlon FX-62 running at 2.8GHz, then that the flagship Core 2 Duo X6800 runs 2.93GHz, and you will begin to understand what the hype surrounding the Core 2 Duo has been about.
As I said before, AMD is screwed!!
Nope - they will have something back - normal back and forth between the 2...

Unfortunately they don't have anything in the pipeline that's going to beat this in a next year.

The P4 has sucked for 5 years now. AMD should have been on top by now as they have beaten them in price and performance nearly the entire time. Now Intel has a better performing chip, and the market lead.

It does suck for AMD.

AMD was on top....They will bring out something eventually that will have everyone oohing and ahhhing just like this chip is doing.

So - it seems you are writing them off because of 1 year....? Wow - a wee bit extreme. the reason AMD is not on "top" is because people didn't buy them in enough numbers..

I say again - and will continue to say it - they will have something back. It took Intel 5 YEARS to get back the performance crown... You want AMD to take it back in less than a year it seems...

BTW - no matter what - BOTH companies make CPU's that are far faster than 95% of the home users need and probably close to 85% of the business desktops need. I can still build a PC for my use and make it last for 3-5 years with a current AMD CPU. Just becuase Intel has the "crown" - does not mean no one will buy them...

Agree.

But we also have to agree that Conroe is the way to go for system builders the next, say, half year.

In 5 years time we'll probably have quantum processors or CPUs floating in liquid nitrogen, but that's a hell of a long time to wait.

I think system builders will know that for the VAST majority of the folks - BOTH companies have more than what is needed speed/processing wise - even for gamers.

Hell no.

I'd really love to cut my DVD recoding time in half, or my BF2 levels load in 1/3 or my RARing of a whole directory in 1/4.

Of course, if all you do is write emails or use Notepad it makes no sense to put more power in your box, but if you use resource intensive apps in a regular basis, you'll really appreciate those optimized features of newer CPUs.

Lets - see - I said the majority and not all and I never mentioned dvd recording.... I have no idea what "hell no" refers to...

I agree with this position. P3's are good enough for my family and friends, especially when just used for email, browsing and homework. Unless hardcore gaming todays CPU's aren't fully taxed by current apps. Im excited about the upcoming changes 'cause I now can buy last years top performers for a bargain and know it will last me a good while.
