MstarMetro throttling p2p connections

I signed up with Mstar in Utah as soon as it was available promised the moon and now its barely getting off the ground.

I used to get great speeds when running a BT then all of the sudden it dropped to nothing! So i called tech support only to be told that they are throttling p2p connections. Is this legal? I want my bandwidth back! Whats the use of having 15mb up and down if it is slower then if I was using dialup.

anyone have any ideas?

If you are talking about bittorrent try turning on encryption (Azureus or uTorrent) and see if that bypasses it. If that doesn't work try turning on lazy-bitfield as well. Also make sure you are using a port between 40000-65535 is you are not the standard BT ports. If that doesn't fix if you may be out of luck

How much are they throttling you? Does MstarMetro have caps?

Yeah, I have MstarMetro as well.. and recently, about a month ago, my torrents have gone down the flusher. In addition, torrent encryption has been a very inadequate solution in my experience.

I am looking to switch to either xmission or at&t.. but I am unsure whether they throttle as well. Any ideas?

I have Xmission DSL and they do not throttle any of their customers including UTOPIA customers. Your monthly payment includes 100gig of transfer. If you want more you can purchase more. Xmission is top notch, you won't find a better ISP in Utah.

encryption works wonders!

The throttle was down to about 10kb/s total. It blew hard! No matter now.

As for a cap, no idea. As I can't even find a contract for them now. going to keep looking, dont want a suprise in the mail.

The cap is 100GB/month with MStar. I called in to ask about the cap and the lady wondered what the heck I was doing when I asked what happened if I were to hit the cap. ha I am getting my fiber installed tomorrow! Yeah!

what did she say when you asked about hitting the cap? I could be close this month.

She said that they have a person that the ONLY job they do is call people if they get close / hit it. She did say they Quote: "Lock in your IP" ... which I am guessing means they may shut off the connection.
