Uh yeah, sounds great. So what speed test site can I test the 50 Mbps to see if it's really that fast?
I wouldn't mind the 5 Mbps upstream though. |

| I've seen the speed tests here push out 28mbps at work where we have a DS3 (45mbits), but never much more. You would have to go out and download a couple of files at the same time from sites known to be fast to really test the connection. Several linux ISOs would probably do it. -- Have problems running your Windows box as a limited user? Try this...»winsudo.toadlife.net |

Just seems to be a bit of marketing hype on the 50 Mbps. Unless I'm downloading from Google or Microsoft, I don't think any website would be able to match that speed just because it's too expensive to have an upload connection that fast.
They really don't need to hype up fiber, we all know it's fast. To me it's no different than going sports car shopping and the saleman telling me their car is so fast I can get a speeding ticket in it. |

| reply to knightmb Well this isn't really for a single person downloading from a single website. This is for people who regularly download from multiple sources at once, or have more than 1 person on the network who download things at the same time. That is where it's an advantage. |

It all looks awesome on the outside until you want something that would just make it sweet only to be hit with the cold hard truth.. it's a residential service and I doubt you will see statics for the service with out a $100 price tag for one.

There are plenty of things that will take advantage of 50 Mbps all at once!
I now want 100 Mbps! |

Otherwise, Verizon is making leaps and bounds with it's Fios service.
But...who needs all that bandwidth? And will the backbone routers handle users with that speed? There is already congestion on many routes in major cities that Verizon cannot fix if the BBN, UUNet and other backbones are not updated to handle the traffic.
You will go as fast as the backbone will let you go. |

1 edit | reply to knightmb Thats wrong. so wrong. Go check out dedicated server pricing at most places. 100mbps with 1 or 2TB/month caps. usually around or under 100$. Most servers can handle it, i get compliments all the time from FIOS users who download an ISO from my ftp stating how nice it is to use their full downstream. Most people with their own server dont cap speeds in per mbps. |

| reply to Slidetbone said by Slidetbone :How many people share that DS3 is the question I would ask. Then, I would assert a post. Lots, but the average usage is around 3mbit. I routinely get close to 45mbit downloading multiple ISOs, but BBR's speed test has never given me about 28mbit download speed, though I just ran a quick test right now, an got 35mbit upload speed at megapath.

You will go as fast as the backbone will let you go. It's a luxury. Not many home users *need* it, but it's nice when downloading big things. As for the backbone, I don't think it's the bottle neck most of the time. The two last miles on either end are usually the culprits. -- Have problems running your Windows box as a limited user?
