Whats with all the hostility in this thread ? Bell South lobbied to prevent a MUNI to build out an internet service FASTER than 128k. Soooo what? In my opinion, muni's should not be sticking their noses into this kind of business. JUST AS they should not be opening Muni-grocery stores and bowling alleys. How bout a Muni-barbershop? What would have been the big deal for the city to cut it to 128kb as the law states? Honestly, BS should sue the city after all is straightened out in that city.
If Earthlink designs and maintains a city-wide WiFi, FINE. It should not be government run and it shouldnt be paid by taxpayers.
Hypothetically, if a muni wi-fi was the only provider of internet service, can you imagine how EXPENSIVE it would be? Sure , it might start out somewhat inexpensive, but will turn into nothing but another tax ripping off the users. Throw it in the same boat as outrageous tolls on Bridges and tunnels. In NYC , you dont get a $110 parking ticket for street cleaning rules and you dont pay a quarter for 10 minutes at a meter to help consumers move their cars in business areas. Its ALL ABOUT REVENUE for the city. Muni Wi-Fi's will be no different. |
