EVDO / WISP options? education?

Hi,

I am looking for some basic information regarding EVDO. New to the technology... I understand Sprint and Verizon are two of the bigger competitors.

I currently have a Cingular cell (old AT&T) and a Sprint cell phone.

Basically looking to ditch my Verizon land line and DSL service. I know that EVDO is not meant to be a replacement for fixed broadband... but looking at the options anyways.

Correct me if I'm wrong... you would need a PC card which would connect to your laptop in order to get service from the wireless provider. There is the potential for "broadband like" speeds.

What about the Sprint option of using the phone as a modem?
How fast are those connection speeds?
What else would I need to work that?

Anything else I should be looking out for?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: EVDO / WISP options? education?

Verizon's service has limitations, as soon as you download too much you get cut off, no warnings, no fee's, just a letter in the mail and that's it.
Also while your DSL might have 60ms pings, ANY kind of wireless through a cell phone company will have 300-500ms pings and slower speeds on average, depends on where you live. Which would make VOIP service's useless.
These services are literally only useful for someone that travels from city to city and does not want to use dialup for they're laptop. You can use it on a desktop with a special adapter, but I would not use the service to begin with.

Stick with your DSL, it's the best connection your going to get until something else rolls along.

Agreed. EVDO would work great if you don't do a whole lot beyond checking your email and some casual surfing a few times a day. Any hefty downloading or indication you're using EVDO as your "primary" service and you'll be getting a call from Verizon support.
