Stock drop MAY indicate doubts about ROI on investment

»finance.yahoo.com/q?s=DVW
Covad's stock has been dipping in late afternoon trading.
The tech sector today dropped about 2%, so the Covad stock drop may not mean much. On the other hand it might mean that Wall St doubts that Covad's investment in the faster technology will have a good ROI. What Covad does in the next few days may tell more about the reaction to the announcement.

Closer than 5,000 feet to the CO so not very exciting to many, many people.

5k feet - for what speed?
This is the Nth times I see some type of loose number thrown in...
ADSL2+ (both ITU G992.5 and ITU G992.5M, 1Mb and 3.5Mb up, respectively) simply doubles the 1.1Mhz downstream freq of ADSL2 within 9000 feet.
FYI: IIRC ADSL2+ is capable for ~25Mbit down within 1km or 3300ft, around 18Mbit up to 2km or 6500ft, ~12Mbit up to 2,5km or over 8000ft etc.

He is just quoting what was in the BBR news item for this topic.
Covad and Earthlink have been offering 8Mbps ADSL2+ to in-range (closer than 5,000 feet to the CO)

Ah, I see, thanks. However this 5k still doesn't really make too much sense to me...

Wall Street probably realizes the following:

-Covad is (mis)managed, they are truly full of morons and have no real vision for the future. Briefly after their bankruptcy they got rid of a good portion of mid-level do-nothing management and things actually better (than before the bankruptcy or now).

-Covad is just pretending that they will somehow have perpetual access to copper.

-Even after erasing a pile of debt in their bankruptcy they still just burn cash like crazy.

Why wouldn't they?

Good for Covad. I honestly don't know much about their network or management, but it seems like they're trying to do this the right way - differentiated services that the incumbents don't generally offer and a network of their own (at least more than most CLEC-types.)

Because in Verizon areas, for example, when Fios is installed they often snip the copper connectors to a house.

Ok. Wasn't sure if he was referring to something physical like that or just implying that the Bells would cut off the CLECs after the UNE rules were relaxed (which hasn't and won't happen.)

I'd imagine that Covad would plan for that situation. Everyone realizes, I think, that "eventually" fiber will be the way to go. For the vast majority of the country, however, that's years down the road.

It will happen when VZ rolls out fiber and when ATT is feeding everyone from RTs.

Right and then VZ has to put it back when I will ask for it.
