5k feet - for what speed?
This is the Nth times I see some type of loose number thrown in...
ADSL2+ (both ITU G992.5 and ITU G992.5M, 1Mb and 3.5Mb up, respectively) simply doubles the 1.1Mhz downstream freq of ADSL2 within 9000 feet.
FYI: IIRC ADSL2+ is capable for ~25Mbit down within 1km or 3300ft, around 18Mbit up to 2km or 6500ft, ~12Mbit up to 2,5km or over 8000ft etc.

He is just quoting what was in the BBR news item for this topic.
Covad and Earthlink have been offering 8Mbps ADSL2+ to in-range (closer than 5,000 feet to the CO)

Ah, I see, thanks. However this 5k still doesn't really make too much sense to me...
