Unpingable

I have a US Robotics Wireless MAXg Router and I am having some trouble getting pingable. I've adjusted all the settings in all the firewalls that I have and I'm still not able to get a ping. So if anyone could help me on getting pingable with my US Robotics Wireless MAXg Router, I would appreciate it!

Are they pinging the correct address?

Maybe your ISP is blocking ping. Not many do but I heard of some that do.

Did you change the firewall settings on the router or the computer(s) on your LAN? Only the setting on the router will make a difference.

What settings on the router could I change to become pingable?

If you connect the broadband modem directly to the computer, are you pingable?

If not, then there are no settings on the router that would do this.

- Are you (they?) using the correct IP address?
- Does your ISP block incoming ping?

I'm not familiar with your router -- But various routers have different names for the same type of thing.

What you are wanting is to allow incoming ICMP Echo requests..

Unfortunately , in this case, ICMP operates through type codes as a protocol.. It isn't on a Layer 3 TCP or 4 UDP type of deal where you could open the port.

I looked through the 5461 USR and didn't quickly see an option to allow these requests.. which is odd.. but I'm sure I missed something.

IE: on my router it is "block anonymous internet requests" -- On another router it is Allow ICMP.

You can always turn your DMZ on for the IP assigned to the computer you wish to be pingable from an outside source , but that would turn off SPI, and other security features of the firewall portion of your router/switch.

Hopefully someone else familiar with the router can chime in here.

Yes, some ISP's block Ping's,.. but it isn't that common at the user level.

You still have not said what IP you are trying to allow ping on. Is it the public IP of the router itself as shown to you by www.whatismyip.com or are you trying to ping the private IP your router hands out to the client by DHCP? Private IPs will never be routable/pingable over the internet.

Okay, first things first, I am pingable when I am on a direct connection with my modem. I know I can be pingable since I've done it several times before. I am trying to ping my computers ip address, and not any other. I plan on activating the DMZ and disable the internal firewall inside the router. Or, at least I think I will if it will not cause any sort of major problem. If I have one firewall on (McAfee Firewall) at all times it shouldn't cause a problem, should it? Would disabling the internal firewall inside the router cause any sort of complication? If so, what?

You still did not say what the IP is. As I already said, "Private IPs will never be routable/pingable over the internet." If your PC is getting a private IP which I am sure it is, you are SOL.
