| New to wireless, want a little help
I'm planning on spending over $1600 on a laptop in the near future, and I figured wireless internet was as easy to get as dsl or cable, but I believe I figured wrong.
I live in hanford, california 93230. From my understanding on wireless internet, you have to subscribe to a wireless internet service provider, then find a hotspot to use it at. The hotspot issue should be no problem as »cnet.jiwire.com/wi-fi-wireless-h···3071.htm that is the closest to me, its less than a mile from where I live. However, I don't believe there are any wireless ISPs in the Hanford area from the searches i've done.
Even if there is a WISP in my area and I sign up for it, how close do I have to be to the mall's (or any other) hot spot? can I use wireless internet in my house connecting to the mall (less than a mile away), or in otherwords what is the proximity. Exactly what equipment do I need.
Thanks |

| I think you are confusing two different things.
Fixed wireless generally refers to a Wireless ISP who operates in your area. They do a site survey at your home/business and if they can get you an adequate signal you can be their customer. They install a radio that gets their wireless signal. It has nothing whatsoever to do with hotspots. They are an ISP much like someone who sells you dialup, DSL or cable Internet Access. They will usually have a tower with an access point on a hill, or something else tall, so their signal will blanket a large area (like whole communities).
Hotspots general refer to locations where somebody has made a wireless Internet access available for free (or not) in a discreet area like a Starbucks, for example.
To further complicate, things some of the big wireless (Phone) companies are selling data connections. I think that goes by EVDO |

| Searching DSLR yeilds at least one CO in reach for DSL. »/coinfo/clli/HNFRCA01/ Normally, one goes with a WISP if there is one in the area that can do better than DSL. You can of course setup a wireless router in your home either way. |
