How many former SunRocket users now on ViaTalk?

How does the line quality compare? Call completion, dropped calls? Other than features, what are the +'s & -'s.

Thanks.

Oh boy this won't be good.
To be honest, the best comparison would be to read through the threads here, the GBU, etc.
Or try a month to month viatalk plan along with SR.

Depends on your inetrnet connection. VT works great for me, while SR was just 'OK'. Others have had the exact opposite experience, so you really can only be the judge.

Does ViaTalk allow you to "upgrade" to one of the longer term plans after you are satisfied with the service?

I'll second montano See Profile's suggestion. I haven't used SR, but VT and CallVantage have worked well on my setup. I'd assume SR would, as well. If you have your own adapter, VT does not charge any setup fees on their BYOD options, so you can try them out for two months for about $11 on the unlimited plan, or 3 months for about $7 on the 500 minute plan if you use the DSLREPORTS coupon. If you get an ATA provided by VT, the coupon takes care of the activation fee and half of the shipping, so the first month of the unlimited plan would be $28 ($5 left of the activation + shipping after DSLREPORTS discount), or $20 for the first month of the 500 min plan.

It seems that one of the biggest service-related issues with VT right now (anyone can feel free to correct me) is their problems with correctly transmitting DTMF tones to some IVR systems. Sound quality has been good for me (and the wife hasn't complained in that respect--she just doesn't like the voicemail system). Overall, it's a solid VoIP product. In most cases (all experiences I've had, but obviously not everyone's based on some irate posts) customer service is outstanding. The feature set is quite rich. If that virtual number is important to you, it's not free, and as of now, they don't offer default distinctive ring for calls to the virtual number. But since you didn't ask for the feature comparison ( ), I'll leave you with my opinion that VT is well worth looking into.

Yes; all you have to do is submit a service ticket and tell them what you want to upgrade to. They will confirm your identity (verify part of your CC number, or similar), then process the request.

Yes, you can change plans without any charge.

"How do I change my plan?
You can change your plan at any time. To change your plan with ViaTalk it's as easy as 1, 2, 3. First, vist our web site here at ViaTalk Support. Second, click on the 'Send Ticket' button and make a request to have your plan changed. Be sure to include account verification in your request. Account verification can be either the first 2 and last 4 digits of the credit card on file or your Billing password. Once we receive the ticket we will go ahead and change your plan, and the change will take place immediately.

Does ViaTalk charge a fee to change plans?
No, ViaTalk does not charge to switch plans."

I have both. The SR and VT quality are comprable I can't tell a difference one way or another. However, the SR seems to have less "hickups". for instance once and a while with VT I dial a number a lot and get a busy signal, but if I call with my cell it goes through no problem and when the party answers they were not on the phone?

Now VT's support beats SR's hands down. I use the ticketing system mainly and they respond promptly. Usually within a half an hour. where if you have SR you are pretty much on your own, as a new voip user I knew more about it than the TS.

For me it depends. ViaTalk has been the most consistent on my Road Runner cable. SunRocket, when good, sounds better than ViaTalk, but when bad, sounds much worse. So far I like the consistency better, and plan on porting my SunRocket number to VT.

I hated SR support and the gizmo. Now with Viatalk. I've had my share of issues but they're quick to resolve them!

I have both, Sunrocket is our primary line, it works great.

I used the Viatalk like for a hour long conversation the other day and I did get some cut-out however it could be my setup. I have installed »www.pbxnsip.com on a server I have hosted in Detroit then VPN back to my house in Nebraska and the trip starts at Murcury.vtnoc.net @ ev1 in Texas.

Anyone know where VT's front ends are and if it's possible to get switched to one closer?

I used both. I'm with ViaTalk now and am very happy. For others, SR is their precious. No one is right or wrong.

FWIW, here's my take... Again, this is my opinion. It is neither right or wrong, it is a single opinion.

Both SR and VT have very good sound quality. SR seemed to be a very slightly "sweeter" sound (in a positive sense), probably related to the gizmo vs. the PAP2. All in all, it is a draw -- both were significantly better than a cell phone call and just about as good as POTS.

Both services have tons of features. If you absoulutely need a second phone number thrown in for free, SR does that. If you want an immediate, reliable failover when your internet goes down, VT is where to be.

There's no question who provides better tech support for the rank and file consumer. I'll leave that as a exercise for the reader.

Competition is a good thing. Read the GBU reviews with a skeptical eye. Ignore the rants. Ignore the hyper advertisement speak.

I just switched from ViaTalk to Sunrocket because Viatalk had advertised so many features. But none of them worked. And I had very choppy call quality that Tech support said they couldnt fix

A week ago. I tried to open tickets but never got a response. It was my first and last time with thim. I think it might have been my isp. But other VOIP's work fine.

What other VOIP's have you used? And your gizmo is already broken?

My number port from SR to VT went through about 45min ago. Call quality on SR was poor: Clipping words and echo were the most troublesome annoyances.

WAF is very high (knock on wood) with VT. She says that she even prefers VT over the POTS line.

BTW it took exactly 20 days to port.

If you've had problems with all of those providers, you probably have some other issues to deal with before you'll be happy with VoIP at all. Before you get defensive, I'm speaking of your ISP connection. Have you visited the testyourvoip.com website and performed the test? What were your results and technical performance? Who's your ISP? What kind of broadband? Cable or DSL?

It's entirely possible that VoIP just won't work well for you and you may have to live with POTS for the time being. It's also possible that with the right broadband provider (switching might help, might not) or the right maintenance of your current connection, you'll be good to go with any of them.

If your issue is with "shady advertising" from all VoIP providers, you're probably not going to be satisfied with any VoIP product.
