Re: Im Broke

Please stop incorrectly refering to copyright infringment as theft , it is not theft, it is copyright infrignment, plain and simple. You don't have to twist any logic, rationalize, or anything to get that straight. It is what it is and is not what it is not.

To be theft, after something is stolen it has to no longer be in posession of whoever previously posessed it, otherwise, it's not theft.

Its not that ghetto.
Go during the day or afternoon.
I don't think its unsafe. I just goto columbia because the theater is way bigger and has better screens.

We've still got $5 Matinee around here. Don't know how much longer it'll last. But it's still around.

Weird isn't it? It's 12$ in my area for a movie and most of it goes to the distributors and studios. I often find the seats in the theatre and the snack food more memorable then the movies I've been seeing lately.

The theaters have to make it somewhere. They make peanuts off of the ticket sales -- so little, in fact, that it's pretty much negligible. That's the reason concession prices are ridiculous.

They don't do these anymore in Boston. And movie tickets are $11's... :P

I just don't watch movies anymore. I think the last one I saw was Lord of the Rings thingy.. I'm not paying $50's to bring my family to a terribly written movie.

Most DVD's are so bad that I just get up and walk away 30 mins or so before its over; not even interested enough to see what happens.

Of course, one of the reasons movie ticket prices are so high is because of the crazy actors union. When is the last time you saw a performance that warranted a $20m pay check? The average CEO annual salary is ~$6m a year and people complain A LOT about how much these guys make. (probably rightful so) Yet "actors" are making over 3x as much. Some of them (Angelina baby) even say that they are outrageously paid.

They should lower movie theater prices like 50%, so theirs ,lol. It should be $3-4 bucks a movie, $2 dollars a drink, not $9 a movie, $4 a drink.
yeah. concessions is where the theatres make their REAL profits.

You should:
1]get a job at a movie theater. Then the movies are free.
2]Become buddies with the managment. I knew a guy that knew a guy that knew a guy that was buds with a theater manager. He'd call and ask if it was kool if he and a few buds went to see a movie. The manger would give them free tickets as long as they paid for food from the concession stand. The theater makes its money from food sales. They take in very little from movie ticket sales.

Hmmm ... Too Many Studios? I Don't Know Of Many With The Sway For National Distribution, Aside From A Few. B Movies Aren't Released In Theatres.

NetFlix Is Good From What I Hear, I Have Not Tried It Yet. I Usually Wait For It To Come To Cable.

Quality vs. Quantity ... I Guess What I Meant Was I'd Prefer Viewing Quality Movies Over Viewing Many Average Or SubPar Movies. I'd Rather Watch Spiderman Than Kung Pow. I Don't Think There Are Too Many Awesome Flicks Out There, "I" Actually Think The Opposite. I Don't Enjoy Paying $8.00 To Watch A Movie Like Kung Pow ... Thats Where The Quality Comes In.

"If there aren't that many movies worth seeing in the first place. Where's the problem?" ... No Problem. Stating My Opinions As You Do With Yours.

Hmmm, I Won't Go Too Far Into The Rights Domain Because We Could Sling Mud Forever On That Front And Never Agree. No Rights To Complain? I View Complaints/Praise As Opinions, Everyone Has Them.

AppleBee's Analogy: True, I Have Chosen Not To Spend My Money On Things I Do Not Enjoy Or Things I Think Are OverPriced. Does This Rape Me The Right To Let People Know My Tastes? On A MessageBoard, You Read Something You Don't Agree With, You Can Voice Your Opinion Or Be Quiet. In This Particuliar Case, We Both Voiced Our Opinions.

Government Funding Movies? I Never Said They Did. As For PeopleTaking Property That Doesn't Belong To Them ... Bottom Line, If There Is A Cheaper Or Free Outlet, Alot Of People Will Take That Outlet (Similiar To Taking A ShortCut To Work).

»www.moviewatcher.com/theatres/th···unit=273 Will Show You Matinee Pricing, Which For The Most Part, Near Universal Pricing For My Area. There Are Matinee Pricings For The Few Movies That Begin Before 12:00PM For $4.25 ... I Assume People Attend Them Or They Wouldn't Exist. For Myself, I Don't Recall Ever Going To A Theatre Between 9:00AM - 12:00PM ... I Know, This Is My Preferance. Like I Stated Earlier, This Is My Opinion And You Are Definitely Entitled To Yours.

On The Issue Of Watching Pirated Movies, I've Seen Friends "Attempt" To Download A Movie Or Two In Downloadable Chunks Back In The Early Days Of Napster ... Needless To Say, They Complained About The Picture Quality As Being Near Unwatchable. Myself, I Could Download Illegally, So Could You. We've Chosen Not To Do So.

some of the most downloaded movies in history have also been the films that have broken a billion dollars in world wide boxoffice sales. so basicly the movie company lost no money because they made a profit. i prefer the big screen and the ability to see it right away though(rather then wait a whole day for it to DL off the ever slow bittorrent).

I would LOVE to find more $4 matinees in my town. Only one in the area is kinda out of the way while the local theaters are at $6.25 for a matinee.

Look, I can stomach people sharing and downloading the movies when the thing has been released to video.. and even then I have a moral issue with that - I dont' take which doesn't belong to me especially when I know someone is selling and asking a price for it.
Yeah. That's out and out bootlegging, which is what I consider true piracy. No way to justify making money off of somebody's work without just compensation.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

This movie isn't even released or intended to be in the hands of the public yet. To take it at this time has NO excuse and YOU KNOW IT!
That would depend on how it got out. If we're talking about some cheap camcorder recording then I don't see what the fuss is about. That's worse quality than taping songs off the radio.

Now if we are talking digital copies then it would depend on how it got out. Somebody steal a pressing from the studio? Copied a theater reel? Maybe it was "leaked" by the company (These things do happen, and while we're on that subject I would like to know what the studio's reaction is to what's happening). If we're talking about somebody actually taking a reel then yeah that's not right.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

I don't buy into the try it before you buy it ESPECIALLY right now becuase it's NOT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE! It's available to buy as a service... a viewing ONLY!
But you do pay money for that viewing. We are still talking about a pre-recorded product that is being released to the public. Not a true performance. Sure the format is at a theater where a mess of people watch at once, but in the end you are still paying to view a pre-recorded product. In theory you do that when you buy a DVD. Only difference is you bought (for a higher price) a license to view the film multiple times at multiple locations. In that light try before you buy still holds water.

If you are "okay" with people sharing music and movies that can be bought at the store how much of a difference are we seeing here? You are still buying something, even if it's a ticket for a single viewing.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

You look at the movie producers as doing well despite the amount of p2p.. I look at the producers loosing money because of the p2p a*sholes.
I want to know what movies have tanked because of P2P. I am talking about movies that were well received, but box office sales were much lower while downloading was extremely high.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

I've liked a movie so much in the past that I would pay to see it a few times. So, I guess in today's world it should only need to be paid to view once? Hell, in some people's thinking it shouldn't even be paid to be viewd at all!
I'll pay twice for a good movie too. I am all for supporting the movies you love. I am not the person you hear online that complains about going to the movies so much they boycott them. I will, however, be selective on where I put my money. Tickets are a lot higher than they used to be, and that puts a damper on my desire to go the movies more than I would like.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

So, I guess that people that have stolen this particular movie, and it has been stolen at this point, will go rush to the theater to see it on the big screen? No way!
Don't presume the actions of people you don't know. I can say with confidence that all those download-and-never-pay people you read in posts like these are in the major minority. This isn't the first example of a highly shared/bootlegged product ending up a top seller.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

""The fact that the movie is the most downloaded AND is breaking box office records tells me that P2P either has little bearing on actual sales or can actually help box office sales.""

SPIN... pure spin! You have NO scientific study to justify your thinking here... It's ALL speculation driven by your personal view.
The results speak for themselves. Pirates II (I won't type the entire movie title) made over $300 million in two weeks (over $400 million internationally). It broke the all-time record for the highest opening weekend and opening day gross, and highest grossing sales in 2006 (that the highest grossing of all movies in 2006... in just two weeks). It is also the fastest to make $300 million of any movie ever.

It's hard not to look at these numbers and say P2P doesn't affect sales. Not so much spin as it is empirical data.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

...the key here is that the movie is still in theaters and thieves made it available the to public.. it's not even under the home viewing protection clause at this point. How can you justify this?
Can't argue too much here on the grounds you address. However in looking at fair use (or rather what is deemed copyright infringement) I don't see much on grounds that go against that.

said by fiberguy See Profile :

Further, the legal owners of this intellectual property does not want a try it before you buy it scene... what they do want you to see is a preview... that's it!
And there have been scores of disappointments when you trust the "spin" of the preview, and the movie turns out to be much less than the sum of the minutes put into that preview. I see P2P to be the potential as the great equalizer in these events. Are people downloading and not going to the theater, EVEN if they liked the movie and would have seen it in the theater? Yeah, no doubt. However in the end Buena Vista is raking in on some obscene money right now, and that's in spite of the rampant trading.

BTW I don't download movies. I can't justify the time spent just to look at a 19" computer screen rendition of a movie I am curious about. Do I get burned at the box office for forking over hard earned cash for a crap movie? Yeah I do. This is why I somewhat endorse file trading of movies. I don't completely agree with it, as you make some good points. Just in the end if I have to make an ultimate judgement call over the whole issue (regardless of individual situations) I would defer to sharing.

Re: This'll Stop Them!

So, what....? Socialized movies too? There are many studios out there competing for many different things - mostly customers.

If there are too many movies to see at $8 each, why don't you wait until the $16.99 DVD comes out and watch it then, or rent it from netflix.

How can you say there are too many movies out there to watch and then use the term QUality vs. Quantity?

If, in your view, they are just cranking out movies that are not equalling quality (see quality vs. quantity) then there aren't that many moveis worth seeing in the first place. Where's the problem?

No one here in this thread, or in this world, is OWED or has the RIGHT to be entertained by the movie industry. You have NO rights what so ever to complain. You DO have the right to not patron this particular business or industry.

If you do not like applebees or think they are too pricey for your taste, do you go eat there? or do you pass it up? If you don't like a movie or a price charged for it, you have the same right to pass it up.

The government (we the people) is not funding the movie industry. The movie industry owes you nothing. So where is this notion that people have a right to take a piece of property that doesn't belong to them? You have the right move right along and leave the movies be if you are not happy. No amount of regulation, no amount of bitching, or public outcry is going to change this fact.

And for the record, the movies, which you can see as low at about $4.25 up to about $8 or so is the cost of a movie. If one chooses to buy over priced popcorn or sodas, that's their problem! The price of the movie still remains the price of the movie. Is there a reason why people can't go 90 minutes without stuffing their face?
