| Connecting to Worldnet via Netgear router
First, let me say that I have been able to connect to the ISP via the Netgear router, but now I am unable to. I can connect, though, with the PC connected directly to the DSL (BritePort) modem.
Here's some of the details. Actually, I am doing this for a friend who lives about 80 miles away. I will be going back to help him some more tomorrow, 7/25/06. Anyway, he's got a Netgear modem which he claims does not work. He showed me how connects to his ISP directly through the DSL modem from his PC.
I connected to his Netgear router via 192.168.1.1, and saw how he had been trying to connect via the router. It looked like he was using a former ISP in the Netgear configuration pages. So, I ran the "Smart Wizard". The first thing it said it would do is check for what type of connection existed. It seemed to do that just fine. The only thing I did, other than respond with defaults, is enter his new ISP info. Then, I was able to connect to the ISP via the Netgear router. Just to see how well it handled "bad things", I unplugged the power to the Netgear router, waited a bit, and then plugged it back in. The connection was broken. So, I went back into the configuration page on the router, and saw "Router Status". From there I saw "Connection Status". When I went there I saw that there was no IP address from the ISP. I clicked on "Connect", the connection was reestablished, and it displayed the dynamic IP from the ISP. I tried that several times over the next hour and half (in between doing other stuff), and each time I was able to reconnect to the ISP. Then, after my friend's wife came home, I was going to show her what I had been doing. This time, however, after I broke the connection, I could not reestablish a connection via the Netgear router. What the heck!? Please help. Thanks.
PS - I did not leave him with no connectivity. In fact, I connected the DSL modem, and both of his PCs all to switch ports on the router. So, each individual PC is able to to establish its own connection to the ISP, but they are not behind the router firewall, which is not good. |
