Upgrade Instructions for VirusScan 9.0 & 10 for Windows 2000/XP :
1. download the package
2. copy 5100eng.exe into a new folder
3. go to the command prompt and enter into that folder
4. type this command: 5100eng.exe /e
5. temporarily disable VirusScan
6. copy new file mcscan32.dll (it's the engine!) into C:\Programs\McAfee.com\VSO and replace the old one
7. enable VirusScan
8. restart Windows

Enjoy.

Hi matunga,

So, we need none of the other files?

yes, the only file you need is the dll (it's the engine)

And why would people want to go through that when they can just double click on the file and let it run?

Each version is different which is why the file is designed to detect your system and your version and then do the job. And no, they didn't put the rest of the files there for the fun of it.

Hello matunga,

the upgrade is not complete this way: I tried on a Win98SE PC, and he is still showing on boot (under DOS):
"McAfee VirusScan for DOS/PM v4.40.0
...
Scan Engine v4.4.00 for DOS/PM"

An other point is, if you look in the 'readme_sdat.txt' file of the previous version (4400),
they wrote:
"FILES FOR VIRUSSCAN FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS 98:
MCSCAN32.VXD Anti-virus engine"
.
So, this part of the engine is also lacking.

Has anybody seen improvements with this version? Are there better heuristics? I can always switch if I want since my ISP gives McAfee to its customers for free.

Hi ZZZZZZZ,

this problem has nothing to do with the new engine, I think.

It comes with an upgrade of *version* (10, or the new (bugged) version 11).
