| Using two modems over home to extend range
Hi ,
I have a WIFI setup at home but I have a computer out of range in a spare room upstairs, VERY poor signal.
There is a phone point in that room on the same line as the main wifi MODEM/ROUTER.
I have a spare non WIFI lucent cellpipe modem/router that seems quite well specified. What I would like to do is use this in the bedroom and somehow integrate it into the existing network.
I dont want it to go off trying to log in to the ISP . All I do is give it a static IP address.
My main router is a 2wire 1800HG which allows bridging and public network routing.
The first step is trying to ping the cellpipe which I have not been able to do although it might be due to routing between the 192.168.1.1 (cellpipe) and 10.10.10.1 on my main LAN.
Am I totally loosing it or is this possible ? Ideally routing a long Cat5 cable upstairs is the answer but I dont want to drill holes and there is already a wired network in the house (phone line).
Any help gratefully accepted

| Totally not possible. You can only have one terminating device in your house for your DSL connection, which is your existing wifi modem/router.
To do what you want, you need phone-line networking equipment, which would mean some new equipment. It might just be easier to run a length of ethernet cable to the one room. |

| Well , I am now on dialup because I cannot connected to my ISP with my main router following my experimentation
I am just hoping that if I leave it powered off for a while service will resume.
I hope I havent upset BT or my ISP but playing about.
I think you are right or look at a better WIFI connection, only problem is an iffy WIFI connection and video skype = a frustrating experience.
Thanks for the comments. |
