 [Extreme] Extremely slow speeds and computer lagging

Hey everyone, just yesterday I was reading a thread in this forum about open ports for torrents and such. I'm using a WRT54Gv4 router. I changed the firmware to DD-WRTv23, installed Utorrent, enabled encryption, and did port forwarding. Ever since this change my internet connection is slower then ever before, this is regardless to whether a torrent is running or not. Sometimes connections to websites even timeout and I have to refresh them. I'm not sure what I should do. I know that I didn't edit any startup scripts for the router's firmware, could that be the problem ? Thanks for any help, I need to get this fixed asap.

 I have an update. I just upgraded my firmware to DDR-WRT v23 SP1. I reset the router to factory settings and cleared the NVRAM. I then manually set up the router from scratch including all wireless and portforwarding settings. I then ran an SSH client and entered the required startup up script. Right now I'm monitoring the situation.
