 [General] Cancelling SBC DSL

We've had SBC for at least 5-6 years and we received a letter notifying us our contract would be expiring within 60 days. We are currently paying $28 for Express. We can stay and pay 34.99 or upgrade to Pro for 17.99. I had a billing issue in regards to an equipment upgrade and customer service telling me one thing which was in fact not true. It wasn't resolved to my satisfaction so I feel it is time to leave SBC.

In January I upgraded my Gateway and paid for it $79.00, and returned my old modem and all equipment that came with it. However I wasn't sure what SBC's cancellation process is. Sonic says i could probably use my current modem, but my question is will SBC want it back?!! I feel I paid for it and I did return the original equipment. But knowing SBC, and how billing works, I'm afraid they might charge me or something.

Thanks

As far as I know, SBC sells modems (often with a rebate) and the customer owns them outright. I'm not aware of any lease arrangements with SBC branded modems. This differs from some resellers where they lend you a modem and you have to return it when you leave. I believe DSLExtreme is that way. I'm not sure about Sonic.

I believe SBC is better about billing problems than they used to be. I had a problem where I got billed for a modem I never received for a dummy account that never existed. This lasted for years while customer service kept crediting my account and their auditing system kept adding the charge back.

You really have to keep after them sometimes. I believe it is always possible to appeal unresolved billing disputes to the California PUC.

The original modem is yours & AT&T would have never asked for it back. In regards to the $79.00, did you get a mail in rebate for $49.99? If you upgraded the service or possibly signed up for another promo, you probably would of received one.

I believe there was a misunderstanding from SBC Customer Service. This past January my adapter to connect a 2nd computer failed and they didn't sell them anymore so I had to buy a new one. I went with a wireless but this required upgrading our Gateway too. He said all I would pay was shipping. I could return my current modem and get rebate back. So I sent it all back, didn't get rebate because upgrade of equipment did not qualify. It had to be upgrade in service. So I was billed $79 for the Gateway in January. I had to keep calling and finally 6 months later found out why. I sent a letter of complaint to AT&T but they said they could not do anything about it. Since the price will only go up and I hate SBC's technical support I feel Sonic will be a refreshing move!

My contract has ended and I believe we are on a month-to-month basis now. (SBC should tell you when the plan ends-- would be nice!)

I recall on the original packaging (when we first got it) that I got the impression everything would need to be returned. But now I am not sure if that just meant if contract was not fulfilled. It would be unfair if they wanted it back, or billed me again!

What are your thoughts? I was hoping someone who did the switch could tell me if this is the case.

And so the only thing I could find was this:
»sbc.yahoo.com/terms/

Upon termination of your Service, for whatever reason, you must return all equipment, undamaged, within twenty one (21) calendar days to SBC. If equipment is not returned within twenty one (21) calendar days, or is returned damaged, you will be charged for the value of the equipment. If all equipment is returned within six (6) months of termination, any fees charged for such equipment will be refunded (other than fees for damages). No refunds will be made for equipment returned after six (6) months from termination.

If you have had the equipment more than 30 days, it's yours, plain & simple. Call 877-722-2743 AT&T equipment department.
