Add me to the list of those unable to get my Earthlink DSL up and running.
VITAL SIGNS: ZyXeL P-600 Cornelius, NC (Provisioned by BellSouth, i think, but not sure) modem configured as shipped from Earthlink no other phones , plugged into any outlets
SYMPTOMS: DSL light solid green Ethernet light solid yellow power light solid email authorization does not come up automatically, but does when i enter »192.168.1.1/zCfgPPPOE.html directly. when i enter my email and password, get message that it fails to recognize my username and password from ZyXel Diagnostics, unit passes DSL synch, but fails DSL loopback. noise margin diagnostics below:

| If your username and password do not stick in the Modem setup then you need to call EL as that usually means your line is not fully setup or that it's configured to another provider. Are you in the Verizon Area? Did you have DSL from another provider before Earthlink?

| reply to phlow yes Dr Olds, i finally gave up on my own and called into a US MasterTech last night. after trying a few things with me, he confirmed that there was an issue and started a trouble ticket.
i guess now i just have to wait for TRON to call me back.
the line was never setup for DSL by me before, but we just bought the house. it's possible it was set up with BellSouth by prior owners. line is provisioned by BellSouth, master tech confirmed that last night.

i am please to report that when i came home from a weekend at the beach kiteboarding, a tag (bellsouth) was on my doorknob with the handwritten note "DSL Repaired". well, his handwritten note is accurate.
connect cleanly, speed seems very good. i am now a happy camper.
i spent a total of about 12 hours on hold and with various 1st level, master techs, and TRON reps going through the same scripts over and over.
if anyone can figure out the smoking gun to convince earthlink when the issue is clearly a line provisioning issue, we could increase their user base's customer satisfaction immensely.
if your symptoms (loopback fail, username / password not accepted) push them hard to come out and check your physical line.
