Re: Conroe.....yo

just waiting for My E6600 to get in stock.

Here is a List of compatible Motherboards:

The Intel D975XBXLKR also supports it But it must be Revision 3.04 or higher:

Yes but in checking out those boards the 965 series has limited or no Over clocking adjustments.

Most you cant do any Advanced or even simple memory adjustments.

It pays to wait for the 965 boards to mature and grow before buying one if you want to OC.

The 975 is the way to go until then. It has all the things to Over Clock and set memory timings.

The memory industry has adopted a fail safe mode that the SPDs are set to a 5-5-5-15 setting so as to insure that a system will boot properly.

For those who don't know what an SPD is. It is a chip on the memory strip that when booting tells the bios what the voltage, speed and timing are for the strip. After it boots you can go back into the Bios and reset it manually to the faster settings.

By not having the options to adjust the memory you have just wasted a bit of money for buying that premium memory strip. Also you need to adjust the memory setting when Over Clocking.

Sorry, Hank, that's only partially true at the moment. New bioses are being released at a fevered pace, gradually bringing in the more advanced features like overclocking and memory timings adjustments. The 965 series chipset has no limits as you describe. I would hazard a guess, like virtually all new mobo series, that bios revisions will continue to mature for months after the board's release.

That being said, I went with an Abit AB9, since all i could pick up yesterday was the cheaper Conroe. Abit has struggled this past year, have received some much needed funding in a partnership with USI, allowing them hopefully to get back to it's core products, enthusiast boards.

I have yet to read anything on how well the Conroes handle memory in async mode. We may have been spoiled with the P4 architecture with it's long memory pipelines and it's ability to run memory at much higher bus speeds than the cpu would run.

True the Chip Set does not have any limits I was referring to the Bios and the lack of maturity of the Mother Board lines available now.

As they become more available and more are sold the Bios will certainly be modified and more controls will be added.

Ahh, I guess I mis-read your post then. Also, what I was trying to say, was, since the only Cnroe I could find a few days ago was the Cheap version with 2MB l2 cache, I didn't go all out with a mobo, saved $100 buy going with the AB9 over a nice 975 board.

"Thank you for shopping at ZipZoomFly !
This e-mail is to inform you that your order has been shipped out." Well, I used fedex's 2 day delivery for a couple dollars more. Hope it arrives today, since Fedex doesn't deliver on Saturday....

No problem Paul.

Let us know after you get the parts and set it up how it fairs and what you can do with it as far as OC and crunching results please.

Oh? I must be remembering from back a few years maybe. I know they used to not deliver on Sat. Or I may be having a senior moment like Cyberschnook has most everyday....

FedEx has the new "home delivery" service, which is cheaper than normal ground, and thus most stores are using it. Home Delivery does deliver on Saturday, normal ground does not.
