Need high speed anonymous server recommendation

I have a server application that I need to appear to come from many different IP addresses. I know that an anonymous proxy server does this, but I have tried a free one once and it was very slow. I would be willing to pay $ for a high quality one. Is there such a thing?

Most webhosting companies will allow you to purchase additional "dedicated" IP addresses, which would be the best way to go...you stay in control of your data.

I can't think of too many (if any?) legitimate reasons that you would need to run an application through multiple anonymous proxies. Can you elaborate on what exactly you're trying to accomplish?

May I suggest Tor then?

Back to the OP's question, it sounded like a webserver application that needed this capability and that's where I'm slightly confused.

We gather info from a state system by screenscrape and add value by using some smart searching capability. Before we wrote this thing we got an OK from the state, but the state is cutting back the amount of bandwidth from a single IP, because the competition has their ear.

Oh yes, we had a shady member here years ago, a guy from Jersey, who acquired a screen scraping application. The application just went about scraping a state real estate web site, and the guy's application presented it as his own data. This guy claimed he added value as well, but the only value I could see is that he sold the very information he got from the public-access state web site as his own.

Anyway, this application was so stupidly designed that the state locked out IP addresses and finally put a quota on how much data could be sucked. This guy (let's call him Rich) wanted ways around the block that the state had implemented due to his abusing the site.

I tried to give Rich advice on how to cache the data, as he clearly was a novice with little engineering background, but he was too thickheaded to listen. All Rich wanted was ways to use his dumbass application on more and more IP addresses so he could continue to pound the state's web site without getting caught... rather than just fixing the code. Finally he figured out a way to get around the state's restrictions, and I can't remember what the resolution was, but he didn't bother to fix his dumbass application's cache or structure.

It wasn't you, was it?

No. But I think I met a guy who had that dumbass application. We operate on a very different level. Yes. When I met him I was impressed at how close his app was to ours, but a different municipality. Anyway, cache is interesting. But I don't think it would work since the amount of data is massive.

I went to the state's site and I saw the data there. The cache would work well from what I remember of the application... and the application seems to be pretty broken if the state keeps knocking you out for too much traffic. However, it's pretty clear that whoever was doing the engineering was looking for the quick fix (more ips! more servers!) rather than looking at alternatives that cost real money (redesign the application so it scales).

You might as well have told the truth. It would have been something like this:

"We want to bypass the state's restrictions on bandwidth because our monetary gain is more important than legitimate users being able to access their state's website. Instead of slowing our visits to the site, we want to accomplish a DDoS so we get what we need despite the state's objections."

I can only hope that the state's IT crew is good enough to thwart your attempts. They've taken actions to preserve access for all, yet you can't accept that. Like a child wanting candy, you want it all, now!

You've got it all wrong. We don't affect the server's throughput at all. We have lots of hard working title searchers who depend on us. They are well aware of where we get the data. And BTW, if our application was so sh.tty, people wouldn't use it. We are half the price of competitors, who are firmly entrenched. Our customers know where to get the data themselves. There is no trade secret here. And to tell you the truth, I have just about had it with dslreports. Who the heck do you people think you are?

I wanted to add one more thing. I have been a member of dslreports since 2001, much longer than anyone doing character degradations up here. How dslreports made certain people who clearly don't get paid to do this type of work "forum administrators" is beyond me. This is not a forum for you to try to get programming work. There was a period in the past where I had to block IM from someone up here who constantly wanted to rewrite my application. This person, un-named, had an idea of how we should modify our application, but clearly had never worked on professional projects of this scale, or had no real experience with real time projects. Bottom line, no hard feelings. I am not shady, never have been and have the security clearances to prove it. I am done with DSLreports. I am done recommending it. I am done posting truthful requests for knowledge. I am done with the lack of truth and, I daresay, knowledge. In the past (maybe 4 or 5 years ago) dslreports was very valuable. I question that going forward after this topic. Bye. Have a nice life. Rich

Wait just a tick... wooliewillie See Profile = latrenta See Profile = richb2 See Profile?? Why did you bother to create yet another user account to post this dribble?

No, you haven't. Show me an account of yours that is active with a join date of 2001. If you can't, then you have not been a member since 2001.

Forum moderators are typically unpaid volunteers. Gosh, I think that's pretty much the norm on the interweb...

And of course said clearances can never be verified by anyone here. I have security clearances too. Big deal. Lots of politicians have clearances and still end up in the news...

well, state, the dude, chances are I'll forget all about this situation and log on in a year or two from now. I will have completely forgotten about the "cache" recommendation and the names you guys called me. Whatever. I'll ask the same question, and most likely get the same answer. Sincerely, good luck to you.

Isn't this pointless quibbling over a particular form of membership, which does nothing to bolster the underlying argument and whose "real" answer would not change the assessments made about the behavior in question?

To be honest, I think this whole thread is pointless given the nature of the responses from the original poster.

What you call quibbling I call an open discussion, and if someone misrepresents themselves here I'm free to call them out on it.

Previously you wanted to use even more bandwidth which is why you ended up using that ASP application-based access counter, which people here helped richb2 See Profile get going. richb2 See Profile also got a lot of help with session variables and SQL (as I recall).

Or maybe not, unless you are now disclosing the source of your data on your web site.

I'm thinking that the competition may not get shut down by the state like you do. Perhaps they have better engineering... which does cost money. Oh wait, earlier you said
Before we wrote this thing we got an OK from the state, but the state is cutting back the amount of bandwidth from a single IP, because the competition has their ear.

So, is the state being unfair, or is there some sort of unfair favoritism going on there? Sounds like a story there, and if there is corruption in state government... perhaps you should shop this story around the TV networks or something, you know, come clean about what's happening.

Actually when you said this (under your last account) I knew it was you. It was the same reason richb2 See Profile gave when I asked about caching in 2003. In fact, we gave richb2 See Profile a lot of help back in 2003. »/nsearch?q=asp···d=550804 And the old richb2 See Profile posting tag is "Wooliewillie".

I'm not sure what to make of that statement, other than to let everyone know it sure wasn't me.

Truthful requests for knowledge are one thing, and people who frequent this forum and spend time helping people get to pick and choose who they help. I'm pretty sure statements like that will only impact how much help you will get with your truthful requests for knowledge.

Rich, I know this really isn't how how you conduct yourself professionally or personally, and you are just trolling, or maybe a bit stressed out or something. Anyways, thanks again for the comic relief, no hard feelings, and see you in a year or two.

This thread does not fail to deliver. I'm surprised that latrenta See Profile / wooliewillie See Profile / richb2 See Profile - whoever he is - has yet to threaten DSLReports with lawsuits.

In return for the amusement this thread has provided, here are some suggestions:

(a) Talk to the IT folks that run the sites. Obviously if they are okay with you scraping the pages then they can white list your IP addresses.

(b) As a hopefully profitable business with an ever expanding client base due to the superior service you offer over your competitors - have you discussed the possibilities of the state providing you with a data feed for the information you need? There are any number of ways to make this proposal appealing and profitable for everyone involved... not to mention that it could reduce your own costs.
