Tom, people often sluff-off the affect of internal house wiring. I personally blame the support mindset of individual phone filters being somehow just as effective - THEY ARE NOT.
Individual phone filters do nothing for the antenna-like properties of the wiring. The filter at the NID kills all that.
Individual phone filters are probably the result of some DSL manager insisting: "We MUST have a self-install kit... at any cost." Yeah, I KNOW that cost. Do they help? Of course - most telephone instruments would kill DSL. But they provide nowhere near the best signal to the modem. They are COMPROMISE only. 
I should go on one of my campaigns and always refer to individual phone filers as "better-than-nothing-phone-filters" without delay. I just might do that.
