[NV] Amazingly low speeds.

I have been experiencing amazingly slow speeds, its like Im on dial - up. Frequent lag in games, cant play radio, cant browse.

The test shows
»/speedtests/49···54116310

I am actually downloading with 5 to 7 kbs right now. Thats just unbearable. The speed has been going down every week now, and it has come to a point where they are just taking my money for nothing.

I mean seriously
That is 99.1% worse than an average user on cox.net

I have a Motorola SBS120 and a Netgear WGR614v2 and never had problems with neither, they are all connected and perfect. I have restarted the internet about 10 times now with no luck at all.

Should I contact customer service?

Honestly customer service will get you probably nothing. "your modem signal is ok" blah blah blah..

(with the rare occasion with a customer service employee who actually knows what he/she is talking about)

Go up to "cox help in this form" look for level2 tech support.

»Cox Help in this Forum Updated 03-28-05

Also, look in your state and see if you have a rep representing your state. Perhaps this person can also help you.

Level 2 will need your modem's mac address and a full description of the problem (he will check the levels of your modem but if they look ok, he will take it to the next step and issue a ticket)

Hopefully, he will resolve your problem

(don't expect a reply until monday though)

I'd doubt customer service would say everything looks okay. 7K/s vs. 4 megabit/s is a pretty massive disparity. Something has to be pretty messed up there......

I'll ask the normal question. Have you run a spyware checker program lately ?

Oh yea, more than one pc on the network? Try each of them alone on the router too. I had a cust one time who had amazing slow speeds. His machine was clean clean clean, no reason for the slow speeds. Ended up being his grandson's computer upstairs had limewire running 24x7 with an unlimited amount of uploads. As soon as I disco'd that pc from the router he started getting his 4 meg down speeds.

Actually around 3 pcs on the network , Theres never more than 2 pc on the network though. The main machine is running 3.2 ghz(dual core) 2gb DDR ram and has no spyware, nor viruses. I checked the other pcs too, nothing like that on them either.

Im just afraid because of my router. That would be really bad, since it took me so long to set it up correctly.
Could the signals be mixing up cause theres like 15 WAN
networs around where I live.

Take it out of the loop, Go wired to one computer to see if it is the problem

When you call it's best to remove the router and keep it as a single pc. They will blame it on the router.

/me sings "blame it on the router.. ya ya"

They can check what the modem is connected to

Yeah that thought came to mind so I did do it without a router, turns out even lower speeds, I have like 4 ethernet cables and tryed them all, its not from there. I still cant call because I have much to do and soccer practice so it may wait till tomorow.

Right now Im working with 2.1 kbs download speed.

OK, I called Cox, the guy told me there seems to be some packet loss. The internet has been getting better though, now Im at 2548/503

They will be sending a tech over on Tuesday, any suggestions on what I should do to maybe fix the problem myself so I dont have to make this guy come here?

Ok, so the Tech guy came today, and oh what a surprise . NO PROBLEMS HERE.

I test 4mb/500kbs on the cox test site, but he doesnt care that I dl from download.com with 50 kbs or that I cant test over 2.5mb/500kbs on any other test site. The lines are good, there is no packet loss and my levels are perfect.

but I still dl with 50 kbs

Slow Again!!

In the technician's defense, if your level are running okay, and he is testing through his test site(which is actually testing inside the ISP's network) then most likely, the issue is not with your ISP. Have you tried running the modem directly to a computer other than the one where your router is located? I would also look at the time frames you are downloading. If you have the problem only at a specific time of day, you may be seeing some network utilization issues that actually may stem from your ISP.

keep in mind that if a site has a speed limit of say 3kb/sec, you'll never get more than 3kb/sec even if you have a 999984 GB/sec connection.

alot of files run at maybe 50 for me on download.com, what i would do is goto »www.thengamer.com/PD/01-Defection/ to see what speeds you get from there, i get full speed from them usuaully so if it STILL goes at 50 then you have a problem.
