Howdy, neighbor. No changes here. Could the SMC WAN have gone bad? Can the SMC WAN (set to static or DHCP) talk to the Arescom at all?
I caught authentication changes a few years ago when authentication changed (CHAP or PAP, I never remember which) and some routers were left behind. Awfully late for that now, though. |

| Nope all was working well until this morning.
Looked on earthlink network status. Stated covad was dueing maintenance through the 7/31 and login in problems could happen. Just never thought it would have happened connected via a router (smc router does pppoe with earthlink). I currently have my pc connection into the dsl modem and logging in via windows xp broadband setup.
Just weird. Plus I've tried to other routers (backup and new one I was going to upgrade to, they have the same issues.) |

| A theory: Something I've seen - a network connection becomes marginal at the electrical interface. Very few devices can successfully talk to it and in your case this is, so far, only the NIC in your PC can talk to the Arescom.
A bad cable can also create such an extremely "picky" connection.
The LINK lights on each end may not indicate the problem - but take a look in case it does. They better always light when connected. |
