| McAffee Update wants to remove Ad-Aware? Good morning, I saw last night that there was a new update, and went to download it. During the install it said it could not update Virusscan if I had Ad-aware SE installed. I cancelled the install.

| reply to ptrowski Hold off on that update, ptrowski
I went thru heck last night after loading it. McAfee Forums are all abuzz with issues:
»forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewforum.php?f=99
»forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=84570
Finally found an old version online (ty, d-o), removed the new "upgrade" and installed v10 again.
It prompted me to verify I had a license, and once I did the old "M" was back
From what I gleaned so far, they will still be updating v10, and it is compatible with Ad-Aware and some other security programs I have.

What kind of update is this? Are we talking about a definition update or the recent Engine update to version 5.1.00? -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

ptrowskiGot Helix?Premium join:2005-03-14 Putnam, CT kudos:4 | reply to ptrowski It's the new engine I assume. It won't allow Virus scan to be installed if Ad-aware is installed also. |

What you need to understand is that with McAfee, engine updates are not a matter of choice, they are a must. The new definition files from this point on, will be written in a way that they can best and sometimes only be interpreted by the new engine. This means that in a few months, your Anti Virus will be useless even though your definitions are up to date.
The automatic update for the engine may have the same safeguards that are used during a fresh install. There's a good chance that you can install the engine manually with no problem. What is your engine version? You can find that by checking the "about" section. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |
|
 | Hi,
manual install for the engine is here: »New McAfee Engine (v. 5100) released on 7/19/06
I don't think it has something to do with the ad-aware glitch.

 | reply to ptrowski just a suggestion: uninstall adaware, run the update that is trying to remove it, then reinstall adaware -- comcast high speed subscribers: »[Newsgroups] use up ur monthly 2gb limit? try this! |

| reply to ptrowski I will be giving that a try. I tried the new update that came packed with a few other tools. It seems that my browsing speed has been greatly reduced, so I will revert back. ravencajunPremium join:2004-08-12 Houston, TX kudos:2 1 edit | reply to ptrowski I just got the notice today for an update to McAfee and went ahead with the update it was a rather large one and also got the screen that popped up saying that my Ad-AwareSE and my Zonealarm had to be removed before certain parts of the download could be installed they were not compatible. I clicked on the skip over for that and it said that Virus scan will not be installed so I x out of that box did not hit ok and then suddenly and install box started. I now have the new M in the task bar and it has so far been getting update definitions for my virus scan and my antispywar, so I have no clue what happened. I show currently that my Virus Scan is Build 10.0.27 Engine version 4450: Dat version 4821: Dat file created 8-3-06. Security center is totally different looking and has a lot more stuff and several more items asking for permission on my zonealarm the security center is version 7.0. build 7.0.317
So did it install virus scan? Do I need to do something? Or am I ok with what happened? I do not want to get rid of zonealarm. I would not mind getting rid of adaware then getting it later if that would help but not zonealarm.
Is this something they are likely to send out another update to correct? Since someone is having a problem trying to go back I am not going to try that right now. |

ravencajunPremium join:2004-08-12 Houston, TX kudos:2 | reply to ptrowski I just will not jump through all those hoops for this update. I am not going to un install zonealarm pro which I have had for years and Ad awareSe then go hunt down some old version of McAfee and hope maybe that will work. This is just absurd that they are pulling this. Why did they not stop this update since they have known for some time now that it is causing so much havoc??? They are losing customers all over the place.
If I have to un install something it will be McAfee products! I have used their products for years now but this is just not acceptable.
The average user is not going to be able to do all that stuff and I am the average user. I will watch for a corrective update.
Please if anyone finds out more about this issue and if there is a correction please keep us posted! Thanks for all this info! By the way they have Locked the topic on the McAfee forum so the rest of us that are affected can not even let them know. |

ravencajunPremium join:2004-08-12 Houston, TX kudos:2 | reply to ptrowski anyone that got the security center update, note that the quick clean feature and the disc defrag are set to run automatically as default and many people are having serious issues after the quick clean runs including loss of all restore points, problems with Windows now being tagged as Not genuine product, and several other issues so you may want to reset that to not run. I found the directions on the McAfee forum under Quick clean. Here are those directions:
Apparently the Security Center's built in defrag and quickclean are turned on by default.
Automatically scheduled tasks for QuickClean and Disk Defragmenter are the features given with this release.
If you do not want to have these scheduled tasks, then please follow the steps given below to remove the default task schedulers.
To turn off the new features for scheduled tasks:
To Delete QuickClean default scheduled task: Launch McAfee SecurityCenter > Click on Maintain Computer(Basic Menu) > Go to 'Task Scheduler' > Click 'Start' button > Select 'McAfee QuickClean' under 'Select operation to schedule:' combo box > Select 'McQcTask' under 'Select an existing task' > Click 'Delete' > Click 'Yes'.
To Delete Defragmenter scheduled task: Launch McAfee SecurityCenter > Click on Maintain Computer(Basic Menu) > Go to 'Task Scheduler' > Click 'Start' button > Select 'Disk Defragmenter' under 'Select operation to schedule:' combo box > Select 'McDefragTask' under 'Select an existing task' > Click 'Delete' > Click 'Yes'. |
