For reasons mentioned by calvoiper , and a consistently progressive approach to business, its difficult to envisison Google not succeeding at this.

I think they may end up with tons of roadblocks locally. See Verizon's NJ battle. Different service, but same type of problem. | |

| Re: Not the point I don't really expect Google to offer the service for free, not on a permanent basis anyway. Mountain View may be an exception if only because it's home base...and a nice showcase.
Earthlink is already positioning muni WiFi (and WiFi telephony), so there is some demand for public/private partnership as well as independent competitors.
And yes, I sadly suspect you're correct in assuming the ILECs will fight tooth and nail. But in a perfect world the money they spend on lawyers and PACs, rather than innovation, might well prove their downfall.
