| I have a question for any and all MODS/HOSTS
I was reading back a ways in the thread when "Hey Mods" was first discussed. Click here to read.
My question for the mods/hosts only is: Are there ways in which the users can help the mods who are not on 24/7 (except Z-X)? I am not trying to kiss anyone's behind just asking information which I am sure others have wondered and felt this was best Forum in which to ask. Hoping more for guidance from the eloquent ones who tirelessly work, live and play on DSLR.
Please only mods/hosts respond to this. Or post an additional question in this thread if you have it.
Just thought I would ask. Thank you in advance. |

| reply to Flagger OK my next question is after a month is it being abused? Or only by the .01% who post outside the rules? Should members who see others posting in the bad way click the hey mods button?
I am sure like anywhere there are people who just don't get along and because of that notice they are told future requests will be ignored. TIA for your guidance. |

| We're working on a site modification that tallies the number of times a user clicks the Hey Mod button. At a predetermined point, when the system detects that the user is just clicking the button to be a PITA, a high voltage current is sent down the line to the user's system. At that point, it's no longer a problem. |

Every time that any user (member or even unregistered) helps someone else find an answer, clear up a problem, decide on an equipment choice or anything like that, they are helping the mods/hosts. Actually, this site isn't about moderators and hosts - we're just here to handle the paperwork. The actual meat and soul of the site IS THE MEMBERS helping one another.
DSLR isn't one of those "ask the experts" sites (good heavens, most of us mods/hosts {but not all} are not anywhere near experts in all the areas discussed) - this is a friendly "ask someone who has walked in the same shoes" sites. The advice received here isn't always technically pure, but most of the time it is functionally correct! |

We're thinking of a further modification that allows us to "vote" on the quality of a "Hey mod". Good "Hey mods" are encouraged, but get enough thumbs-down on your "Hey Mods" and you start losing stars.

| reply to Flagger Thanks for answering. Hopefully other members will see this and not be afraid to help. And no Z-X I don't really think you are on 24-7. I just picture you waking up like Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School shouting "The Council of Trent". Of course in your case it would be something meant to help a user.

| reply to Flagger Maybe I am just paranoid, but I think sometimes I overuse that button. I don't use if for the following reasons, but sometimes I want to. I mean sometimes I really wish for the thumbs down button because someone says something that could be taken wrong or when they are starting to stir up anger (but not really flaming). Sometimes people tend to make a thread go down hill by taking the subject too far. I am not going to push the issue of thumbs down but I wish there was another option besides "hey mods". Do you know what I mean? I don't want to be a burden. -- Do not meddle in the affairs of cats, for they are spiteful, and will piss on your keyboard..... meow. |

| I think by the tone of these posts the mods/hosts don't see the users as a burden. If you read the original thread in my first post or wheelert's post on the good way and bad way of getting noticed at DSLR, you are keeping the site friendly by acting as an extra set of eyes.
You are not making decisions on what stays or goes, you are just merely drawing attention to a post because you are in a thread or Forum where a mod might not be at that moment. All mods have access to something going into the Hey Mods folder.
I also think if you were abusing it eg, chasing down a poster that had p*ssed you off and hey mods his/her every post, you would be told to knock it off, but I don't know. |

That is why I asked this question because of statements like yours. No one wants to feel like a narc, and I certainly don't want to ever have a "holier than thou" attitude about this place I enjoy visiting. I wanted to clarify its usage. |

As I said elsewhere (and being lazy will retype rather than trying to find) the "hey mods" button provides feedback to the user/pusher. You click "hey Mod!" on a message. One of six things will happen:
The message will be vaporized -- gone without a trace. The message will be sent to Post Jail. The message thread will be locked. The message will be "edited by moderator." Nothing will happen to the message or thread. A host/moderator will reply to the message.
In the first four cases you 'hey mod' produced a required action and was a good 'hey mod'. It enables the hosts and moderators to watch the site without having to read every single one of the thousands of daily posts.
In the last two cases your 'hey mod' did not produce the actions you thought it would and thus was a mistaken 'hey mod' -- you need to lighten up and get a little more tolerant. -- Telecommunications installation and maintenance since 1966 |

| reply to Flagger Thanks to everyone who has responded to this. I didn't notice that three weeks ago this had been discussed in this very Forum in this thread. Must have been a brain fry on my end. I also goes to show me how searching back threads past the first, second, and third screens can bring me the answer I was looking for. Of course that topic is best left in another thread entirely.
Thanks again to all who responded and inputted. |
