The Two Kinds of Photographers.

A MUST read article. »www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds···hers.htm

Here is an exceprt:

Creatives usually have no time for forums. I make the time to do the informative parts of this website thanks to your help and the ads.

Too many people get sucked into wasting creative time reading a zillion comments from total strangers on forums, discussion groups and chat rooms. Some people start believing what they read.

A huge problem with forums is the people who post the most shoot the least. These forums make it tough to know the credentials of the posters. More weight is given to well-spoken frequent contributors than a competent professional who might step in to help. Worse, the crankiest members of the forum will proceed to heckle the one guy who knows and tried to help, and then he never returns.

Photographers tend to be crummy writers. Forums are overloaded with comments from the people you most want to avoid. Many of these people don't even own the gear they're discussing; they just like to talk! Not that all the information is bad, but it is disproportionately weighted in the wrong direction.

Look at any forum on any subject from art to zebras, and you'll see many who spend more time calling each other stupid than discussing the topic. Many who live in these forums take more pleasure in hurling epithets than in discussing the topic. As any high-school psychology student knows, these guys are confirming Freud's observations that all human action is based on making oneself feel important. I prefer to do this by creating bitchin' photos. Forum posters find it easier to try to look smart by posting as much as they can. Don't let yourself get distracted by the bickering or people trying to throw out a lot of information to look smart. Go make photos and see for yourself what looks good.

Euphemize these as "forums" or "online discussions," but they're still just chat rooms. They're the best places to get the worst information, since the least educated are the ones who contribute the most. Those who know the most are too busy making more photos to spend much time there.

So that's what I'm doing wrong. Okay, that makes it 1519 posts. That means I must know what I'm doing.

I rather disagree. I don't think that this personifies this Forum. I believe that there are many here who are very good photographers, write well, and do a wonderful job of sharing technique etc. with others for the purpose of educating. Actually, posting this article is just an example of that kind of thing...being an excellent photographer while at the same time having a load of things to share with others and not just for the sake of hearing/seeing themself talk. I think we have both forms of photographer here but for the most part, not the down side of the art.

I'll agree with jaykaykay See Profile that this forum is different. In fact, much of this web site is different. That's the reason why this is one of only two that I frequent.

That's just stupid.

Seriously, I agree that this forum is pretty good for *not* doing that kinda stuff, and for having active posters with work and ideas I can learn a lot from.

So no one stop posting because of stupie-pants ken.

Rockwell is an ass. Anyone who takes himself as serious as Ken takes himself is in dire need of an enema or a lump of coal if there's a pressing need to make a diamond.

Couldn't agree more!! But as Nezmo See Profile stated, he is always good for a laugh, that is about all he is good for.

Man, you crack me up!

The article is good for a nice laugh. I believe this forum is different from the rest though. His thesis does hold true for many many photography forums I've visited. It is a sad truth.

IMHO, this forum is mainly based around photos you've actually taken!

I don't know.....this Rockwell guy could be onto something here. Some of what he describes are things I have seen many, many times.

But don't you think it's a little ironic? He's on a Website himself making commentary. Maybe not in a forum but it's all the same. He does have some points but his gross generalizations make him arrogant in my book. Then again, I have been accused of arrogance too (quite rightly so I might add).

I am not sure I would call it arrogence. I would call it confidence.

I would call it arrogance, hypocritical arrogance. He definitely has overbearing pride and thinks his fecal material is not malodorous.

Why is this thread descending
into calling the man names? He has put an incredible amount of time and effort into his work and if you read his web site he has many thought provoking and helpful articles and ideas.

Some may disagree with his opinions and his style of writing may not be for all tastes......but.......I think he deserves a fair shake.

Because everything I've read from him is one-sided, biased and written in such a manner as to be extremely holier-than-thou. I'm not calling the man names, I'm just saying he thinks his shit don't stink and his opinion is the only one.

Just out of curiosity....can you point me to an article of his that shows his "one-sided, biased and extremely holier-than-thou attitude"?

I mean no disrespect B52GUNR See Profile. I am just interested in what specifically you are referring to. I find his thoughts and articles refreshing and quite fascinating.
