Stupid Proxomitron tricks...

proxoHI.zip 180 bytes
(proxoHI.cmd)
... I've noticed something with proxomitron. Hopefully, this home of the "unofficial proxo team" will be the right venue to post this trivial little snippet... I've noticed that, with more than two or three IE threads allowed in the registry, and a fair sized rule set, Proxo can slow up rendering and loads, if only just a little... it doesn't slow down connection speed, and this trick won't show a measurable difference there, just in load and render speed, on some set ups. The low down and dirty is that when I set up a server, I usually try running it at high priority, if it doesn't conflict with anything... so, I reasoned today, proxo's a server, right? The better it handles threads, the better it works, right? Here's the result.

This is a one line CMD file for NT. The line is "start/high proxomitron.exe." I used a CMD because I haven't tested this on 9x, and I don't want anyone messing up... I'm real rusty with 9x and threading and priority models and all that. But I know it works with NT. Put it in the Proxo home folder, and create a shortcut on the desktop or in start up to the cmd file... then, when you start Proxomitron, it fires up at high priority. gain, no documentable speed boost, but it does make a noticible difference in how fast the pages "seem" to load, if you get my drift.

Zhen, your comments are always appreciated... it's such a dumb little thing, I know, but I sort of liked it (simple stuff can be great stuff... we always hear someone commenting on speed problems) ...

Anyway, for anyone interested... and, remember, it's only tested on NT4, but it's been very stable, so far... [he says, crossing his fingers behind his back ) ...

Thought I would post it here for comments... it could easily be applied to any server software that carries a heavy thread load, just never occurred to me with Proxo... until today... of course, standard warnings about priority and stability apply, and any thoughts on the idea are appreciated...

Would be only a matter of time before you posted about this. Yes this has been noticed before by RadioDoc I believe. He had set the threads to a higher level and experienced some issues running Proxo. Once he tinkered with the value and set it to 4 I believe, the problems disappeared.

qwion: Thanks for the not so stupid Proxo trick...
I have it loaded on my W2K box, and I noticed immediate results. I wonder what Realtime will do? Hmmmmm....

I just put this into my Proxo on my Win98SE machine.
I'm running on a Mozilla 0.9.5 browser. Prior to this .bat install, it would load web pages slow, but no it's flat kicking a**. Almost as good as IE.

I'll keep playing around and let you know how it goes.
