anyone who runs a wireless network is a fool if they do not secure it. your just asking for trouble. i have one and it is locked. no one is going to steal my bandwidth, i work too hard to pay for it and i refuse to have someone leeching off it. |

We need routers with easy to use hotspot firmware, and then you could let people register for free and then they'd get say 500kbps or basically just enough to browse without impacting your performance much (assuming say 3mbit line)
In my neighborhood I find 27 different wireless networks from my house. Unfortunatly most are encrypted. But what I've done in the past is point my 24dB grid towards one of the faster open ones, and then re-broadcast it over my 9dB omni w/ amplifier and call it "freeinet". Hehehe. Or I load up linux and cap some weak packets, but I have enough open networks around here I haven't had to resort to that *much* yet. Although if I was your neighbor and knew you had that attitude I'd probably take a shot at your network :P |

| reply to Jerm You feel "sick" that he feels that since he pays for his connection and noone else does then he is the only one who has the right to use? By your reasoning I guess your neighbors should just be able to use your car whenever they feel like it, I mean it makes them sick just knowing you have a car to drive and expect to be the only person using it.... |
