Essentially, if you do a traceroute to somewhere (anywhere) and see a whole bunch of hops with IPs that resolve to comcast, you're on CRAN.

The idea is that the Comcast internal network has less latency than routing through the greater internet, so traffic goes through that.

A question:

How many(on average) Comcast routers are in a trace if not CRAN? Maybe 1 or 2?

So CRAN averages about 6 or so routers?

It's hard to say. I'd say that most of the time, there are less than five or six hops after CRAN ends before the destination.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but on average it does seem to result in pretty good latency.

Do you mind posting a trace? Might be good for the OP to see CRAN.

Yeah NetFixer See Profile, that looks much more like CRAN because those IP addresses don't resolve to dns names, which is characteristic of CRAN.

To be quite honest, I'm not sure if my area is even CRAN yet, so that tracert I posted might not be exemplary.

I don't see any indication that you are on CRAN. There are only two Comcast hops, neither show discarded ICMP packets, and both have rDNS entries.

Net fixer's post shows a typical CRAN configuration.

Dadkins is also probably CRAN.

That is actually a basic characteristic of CRAN.

Here is the whois info for the 68.x.x.x IP block (Comcast) and the 12.x.x.x IP block (ATT) to show why I don't think that the att.net hops can be considered part of CRAN.

It would seem likely that 10g means 10 gigabit, which is consistent with what we know of CRAN.

The ATT hops are not CRAN. They are bandwidth purchased from ATT.net.
