Re: Never makes it...

Things don't make it into North Long Beach for a reason; a fear of being shot at

Anyways, has anyone actually tried using their existing "hotzone"? It's terrible. How do they expect to expand this city wide?

Broadband, including FiOS in some areas, is available all over Long Beach. It isn't like LB is some sort of "broadband blackhole" that needs wifi.

Sorry, but we do need this alternative. We have two terrible choices for broadband here: Charter and Verizon. Both are among the slowest and most expensive providers in their respective technologies.

I welcome this and would be more than thrilled to dump Charter. I can certainly think of lots of other things to do with the $60 a month I now spend.

City politicians are like lemmings - they will play follow the leader as they plunge off the cliff. Other cities are doing it, so they have to too - even if it will barely work. After all, the city isn't paying for it, so they have nothing to lose and a lot of good PR to gain.

P.S.> I did get a kick out of this statement in the story:
quote:
Long Beach is among a growing number of cities to go wireless. Philadelphia is considered the first major city to be wireless.
Except Philly isn't wireless yet and may not be for at least a year. Seems the reporters never get the story right. They just print whatever the PR people hand them.

Bun,
You should consider Verizon, It's half the price of Charter. It's only $30 a month for 3mb. Furthermore, FIOS will eventually be in most afluent places in LB.

Try using the existing "hotzone" in downtown LB and you'll see what I'm talking about . Spotty coverage, slow speeds and packet loss. While these wifi networks can be used for checking email and other non-demanding tasks, they really aren't something you can use for everyday activities like downloading files and playing online games.

Last I checked, there are some wireless ISP options available in the LB area. If you're truly interested, you might want to check into them.

You're being far too optimistic.

Since when have most reporters ever cared about facts?

I could be wrong, but I do not believe those type of people are who they are targeting. I would expect they are targeting the web surfer and email checker and would suggest the others opt for the other services.

I had Verizon in past years and it was unreliable--plus their customer service just reeked. And I dont have a land line anymore (do they do naked DSL?) If and when FIOS becomes available in my area, I will reconsider them but right now, its no better than what I have.
