Question about Rogers

I live in Whitby, ON, and curently use Bell HSE (3/5mbit line) however, I get a speed of 1mbit as my lines can't handle the voltage (really old). So I was thinking of switching to Rogers.

Questions:
1. Should I expect AT LEAST over 1mbit speed, no matter what the hour if I uses Extreme?
2. Can I ever expect to reach the actual 6mbit rated speed?
3. Does the Motorola 5120 work with Rogers?
4. If I don't currently have any Rogers Cable TV, how hard is it to hook up? Should I brace myself for a $150 charge for someone to open a box and plug me in?
5. Any problems with cable I should be aware of? I'm having my fair share with Sympatico (dropoffs, etc.)
6. Anyone in my area have any feedback about the service?

Thanks in advance.

Whoops, also meant to ask if Extreme had throttling on Torrents (seen a few topics on this, no conclusive answer)..I mean, I currently can d/l torrents at max of about 30kb/s, so even a "slow" download because of encryption (if neccessary) would most likely be faster, no?

1) With DOCSIS modems, except in certain overloaded areas, you can expect the advertised speeds most of the time.

2) Yes ... First, there are no additional overheads on the rated speeds, and second, the speed is not dependent on anything but overloading and signal strength/line noise. In general though, the difference between good signal strength and not working at all is so small that low speeds due to poor signal strength is a pretty rare problem.

3) Probably, but in general Rogers does NOT like to register modems that are not registered with them ... i.e. ones you purchased not from Rogers, Future Shop, Best Buy, and The Source. You can rent a modem if they won't register yours if you don't want to buy.

4) They will install a drop at just a standard new account fee (normally $40 or so)

5) Throttling of torrents and other file sharing programs. While this is usually area and seemingly user dependent, it's hard to know if it will or will not impact you, but you need to assume it will if torrents are important to you.

Mike, Im in Whitby also with Rogers Extreme. I do achieve a 6mb connection, with 800kb upload if not more at most times. They have throttled BT Bandwidth, it was unworkable last few days 3kb/s up, now I can send out as much as i need ~85kb/s (if I remove cap), but the download speeds are sucking (Its probably just the torrents). I was about to jump to bell, but I might hold out a bit longer..

Hope this helps?

After a few more tests, I feel bad about that last post.. Its not the torrent, 600seeders, 600leachers, huge swarm speed. BT traffic is unstable at best due to the new application(s) they have in place. I'd go 3web if you can't go DSL..

Even though 3web are cheaper than Rogers and don't have caps, I would be *very* hesitant to go with them personally speaking because of the horror stories.

I'm in Whitby too! Looks like Rogers made some changes over the weekend. I have played with the torrent settings for hours. DL speeds ARE bad. I have tried all kinds of different ports and I have tried turning on encryption etc.

Off topic but worth noting. For those of you using Rogers with a real email client like thunderbird, SMTP and POP will not work any more! You will need to change your settings to smtp.broadband.rogers.com and pop.broadband.rogers.com

Are you behind a router? Connected directly to the modem you are connected directly to the Rogers network and POP/SMTP should work. Behind a router and the router needs to know the actual server address and thus smtp.broadband.rogers.com and pop.broadband.rogers.com are needed.

As your question has already been answered I'll just toss in my 2 cents. I get the 6meg down 800k up 100% of the time so far, or at least in an acceptable range. BT up load is really bad Here but I am still downloading at good speeds 80 - 400 down depending on the torrent but normaly over the average swarm speed.

Hmm, you say there is no dependancies on the cable lines, but what about daisychaining? I was under the impression that cable had speed dipos during "prime time" when more people on your node where using their internet.

And with the bittorrent problem, is there any solution to this? What are your "low" speeds? Have you tried using the tips?

That sorta bugs me as I do use torrents once in a while...no way to contact Rogers about that?

And it's nice to see people from Whitby here, good indication of the speeds...what area about? (Name two main streets).

Yes, it is possible to lose speed when lots of people are on your node, *if* the node is overloaded. Unfortunately, there is little way to know whether your area is overloaded. Much depends on who did the original install of the cable network.

For example, when Scarborough's cable operator installed cable there, each trunk passed by a LOT of homes, so adding "2 way" to that resulted in lots of problems with overloaded nodes. Rogers has been working, albeit slowly, on resolving that by relaying the network.

There were, for example, problems too in parts of Pickering for similar reasons, although not as bad as Scarborough.

The only way to be sure is to try it out.

As for throttling, there isn't a lot you can do about that, other than use encryption or vpn services. Lots of threads about both those topics. Please do a search of the forum for threads.

I did do some reading about the throttling, but I was looking for some first hand speed experiences when using encryption and cable.

Thanks for the info though.

So, for the same price, think I'll find Rogers Extreme faster and more stable than Bell HSE (1mbit).

I live in Ottawa Ontario and my BT speeds are pretty good, have you tried port 1720?

I'm on Bell HSE right now, wanted to know user experiences with Rogers and BT.

Sorry Mike, but there are just thousands of posts of user experiences here already on Rogers and BT and there's no need to drag up another even 20! Put simply, for the most part, it's awful. Some folk are doing OK with encryption, some aren't. Some are doing OK on obscure ports, most aren't. Some are doing OK with vpn connections through organisations like secureix.

mmkay then...though for the last kick, I thought this was a little funny:

quote:
We understand your concerns regarding issues you are experiencing with
your peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. To ensure a consistently high
level of service for all Rogers customers, it is necessary to put limits
on the amount of network bandwidth available for certain types of
applications. This process is called traffic regulation (rate-limiting,
traffic shaping, throttling).

As peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have grown in popularity, their share
of overall network traffic has increased dramatically. In particular,
the application Bittorrent uses all of the space available for uploads.
To ensure that a relatively small number of applications do not slow
service for everyone, Rogers limits the space available for P2P uploads.
This ensures all customers have a high level of service for
time-sensitive tasks like sending email, requesting web pages or voice
messaging.

Rogers does not block any type of Internet traffic or application. Nor
do we monitor the content of customer communications or activities on
the Internet. Our traffic regulation is based on the type of
application, not the way it is used.
