 1960 |
This was located on the N side of El Toro Road between the tracks and what is now Jeronimo Rd., almost across from the fire station.
You can see the post office boxes on the right. That was the El Toro Post Office in its entirety. This was the last chance for gas before heading out into the canyons. They even sold Levis, socks, dungarees, work boots and overalls. Everything for the well-dressed citrus farmer.
ETR was two lanes back then. I remember this as if it were yesterday. -- You do not need the Bible to justify love, but no better tool has been invented to justify hate. ~ R. A. Weatherwax |

| reply to CurtesyFlush Mission Viejo Phase 2. The freeway runs through the bottom, and the road heading up to a deadend past those two fake lakes is Oso Parkway. The lakes are part of the MV golf course facilities. Only the lower lake remains, the upper one is parking, IIRC.

| reply to CurtesyFlush Aerial view of El Toro and NW Mission Viejo in the very early seventies. For orientation, extreme lower left of center you can see the small green tree dotted area of the cemetery, so the "T" intersection above that and to the right a bit is Trabuco Rd and El Toro Rd. As you can see, Trabuco Rd hasn't been punched through to its namesake on the other side of the little valley yet. You can see the homes of the Seville tract crawling up the hill to the left of the Trabuco extension, which then intersects with one of the nascent fragments of Los Alisos Blvd.
I'll let those of you who are familiar with the current configuration of this area marvel at the changes wrought. I can remember this like it was yesterday. -- You're a bum, you're a punk, you're an old slut on junk.... Póg mo thóin. |

| reply to CurtesyFlush Received an email today. I thought it was worth moving to the forum:
Lockheed During WWII(1940s pictures)
During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from Japanese air attack.
They covered it with camouflage netting to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air.
The first picture is the before and the others, after the change.

1 edit | reply to CurtesyFlush Here's a contemporary overhead shot of the exact block depicted in the 1949 shot with the ice cream man in it.
EDIT: As you can see, the freeway took out Ferguson Alley. According to my 1945 Renie Pocket Atlas of Los Angeles, it also took out nearby Sanchez St, Fort Moore and Negro Alley. |
