KVM switch...

Is this a good KVM switch: »www.circuitcity.com/ssm/IOGEAR-M···etail.do ?

I am going to use it when I fix/clean PC's for family members so I can use my monitor and keyboard since I do not have a lot of room for a separate monitor and keyboard...

I have a Belkin that is similar to that one.

That one is PS/2 mouse and keyboard. There are similar ones with USB. Pick the one that matches your hardware.

Occasionally KVMs choke (unresponsive keyboard) when installing Windows or working in the BIOS.

I use a KVM only for the video, with a separate keyboard/mouse on the unit being fixed.

They can also be fussy about mice that have a USB to PS2 adaptor...

I have that same KVM for my wife's computer and my dedicated folding machine. I love it, it has a nice picture, and switches between displays pretty fast. {hit the scroll lock twice to switch}.

For what you are going to be using it for you shouldn't have any problems what so ever.

I've had good luck with Trendnet KVM's
This one gives you audio, which I don't have or need on mine.

I tried that and it didn't work. Do you have anything else connected, or a power brick connected?

You need to have at least one set of the PS2 connectors connected. (or presumably a powered KVM)

I should have been more specific in my previous post about leaving one set of PS2 cables connected (not the set for the system being fixed).

I had/have that one, worked good, it's a soft key to changed from one machine to the other, nice because it's all in one.

I have a more expensive sibling (4 way) of that KVM and its video is excellent, and aside from the softkey (which I'd like to disable) I had no problem with it.

Occasionally, when I type fast I can accidentally activate the softkey, and I really hate that because then I have to switch back manually.

Just some info that may help.

You may what to get a KVM with it's own power.

Most of the KVM's that I have had that did not have it's own power will give you a problem.

I have orderded and used this KVM for a customer with a critical application. It failed. MicroCenter advised a Linksys model. Linksys has performed for over a year without problems.

I have the same one and I don't think I ever hit CTRL-ALT-SHIFT by accident. It does occasionally refuse to switch and I have to power down everything at that point to get it going but over all I have been happy.

CylonRed: I use it for fixing PC's also. I suggest getting a router also if you do not already have one.

one thing that you MUST find out is the refresh rate support of the Video Cables...

If you are like me who still is addicted to CRT with ultra high rates, 120Hz should look for the more expensive KVMs....

I will eventually get LCD and any refresh rate at to above 70 Hz is good for me...

I have a similar device (Belkin I think) and it has worked flawlessly for me. The connectors from the monitor/keyboard/mouse is kinda tight when you have to use a USB -> PS2 connector, but other than that it works great.

I used this KVM switch. great one, the only thing I remember that I hate, is when you switch, there is like 1 or 2 sec of lag before you con use youre keyboard and mouse.

I have a 2 port belkin that works pretty well for my deskside system...

I have an 8 port Cybex autoview 400 for my server rack - with KVM extender so I can sit at my work table in my home shop and tap away on any of the 5 boxes connected to it sitting in the cabinet 20' away.
