| NEC ND-6650A DVD writer problem
I have two ND-6650A DVD writers, let's say A and B. When using A to burn 99% size of DVD-R,the files in the very end of capacity is not readable, but when using B to burn, it is readable. Also, some A-burned disc cannot be read by B but only by A itself, some B-burned disc cannot be read by A but only B itself. Does this mean these two drives burn with different physical track? Or these two drives have different track caliberation accuracy? |

Can you lower the speed of the burns and improve the results?
Have you tried different brands of media to see if the problem is unique to only certain brands? |

| said by dslcast :I tried three brands media at 8x and 4x speed with same result. Thoughts:
1) check this site to compare comments on media reliability of different brands. Maybe you can find a different one that works better on your NEC burner. Scroll down the opening part of the first page this links to:
2) If the two NEC burners are in different computers try swapping them out. Ironically, it was said that worked to cure the same problem with a NEC DVD model 35xx. Maybe it would work with yours as well.
3) If you haven't already done so, can you call NEC tech support. Perhaps they have a solution.
Either way, let us know what works.
Good luck with it. |

| two 6650 are used in same Dell C610 laptop. I bought the second 6650 after I noticed first 6650 cannot burn readable disc with 99% capacity.the two 6650 did act differently. from the symptons I suspect that two 6650's physical track seeking/positioning control mechanism might not be the same although the firmware are same version. one thing I could add is, with same media, B-burned disc could not be read in another LG DVD-ROM while A-burned disc can be read by LG DVD-ROM, although B can make readable 99% capacity disc(readable by B itself) while A cannot burn readable 99% size disc(no error message though). |

| What does NEC tech support have to say about all this?
It sounds like both drives may be defective, but in different ways.
You are not alone in noticing a DVD burning problem with the NEC burners. Other incidences, but with other NEC models were reported on the Internet.
Maybe that problem is true of all brands, however.
My NEC equipment has been pretty good and tech support was helpful the one time I called them. |

1 edit | The site linked reports on the reliability of the media rather than the burners.
They do indicate which brands of DVD disks work on all reported DVD makes and which brand disks have reported makes upon which they do not work.
One Internet post found with a Google search indicated that NEC Tech support had said not to use a specific brand. Sure enough, it was the brand the user was using and when they switched, they said anyway, that the newly burned DVD was readable.
Check the site in the link for more info and try Googling "NEC DVD burned disk not readable" or search strings to that effect for more info.
Likewise, I'd see what tech support has to say. They guided me through "fixing" a NEC LCD monitor that had temporarily failed. |

| disc brand specific problem seems to be related with firmware, as the following posts indicate: --------------------------------------------------------- NEC ND-6650A Issues... Need Some Help Pls For some reason my NEC ND-6650A (Purchased retail at Newegg.com for my old Inspiron 8100) will only burn my DVD-Rs which are rated at 16x (officially OptoDiscR016) at a maximum of 2x. Also my CD-Rs rated at 52x (officially Lead Data) will only burn at a maximum of 8x. Both discs are Digital Media brand. I'm using Nero 6.6 and checked the Bitsettings for my DVD-Rs using Nero CD/DVD Speed to identify them, then MediaCodeSpeedEdit to check the firmware settings. My firmware indeed only rates my 16x DVDs at a max burn speed of 2x.
Ive opened Nero with no disc in the bay and gone through the motions of creating a project until I get to the final page where you can choose the write speed. For my CDs I have options of 24x, 20x, 16x, and a few more. The point being that Nero recognizes the drives capable speeds correctly. However when I put in one of my 52x rated CDs the write speed turns to 8x and goes grey so Im unable to change it. The possible DVD write speeds I get when going through the same process (being sure that I have a D5 disc selected and not D9) are only 2.4x, 2x, and 1x. Then when I insert one of my 16x rated DVD-Rs the speed locks on 2x and goes unselectable. This seems to be more of a problem because Nero doesnt even recognize that my drive is capable of burning a DVD at 8x, 6x, or 4x.
I also have an ND-3500 in my desktop. My 3500 drive is successfully able to burn the same discs at 48x and 16x respectively. Im going to go get some new media to further test in my 6650 soon.
So my questions are these: What could be wrong with my Drive/Firmware/Software/Computer to cause my apparent max DVD write speed within Nero to only be 2.4x when it should be 8x? Why is my drive (via Nero) downgrading well below the maximum burn speeds once I insert media that should easily meet those speeds? What can I do to try to fix the afore mentioned problems? And what type of media do you all suggest I buy to test my drive further?
I did a fair bit of reading throughout the forum trying to troubleshoot my problem, but I'm sure I probably overlooked some stuff. So sorry for any newb mistakes I made, and..
Thanks in advance for the help,

Your 16X DVDs are newer than the firmware for your 6650 so it cannot tell what it is burning. By default it drops to a slower speed. You will have this problem until you find a newer firmware and upgrade; even then there is no guarantee it will have the 16X discs.
------------------------------------------------------- it seems that my two 6650 behaving different in same media could mean something else.
anyway, if someone find any brand (laptop drive version) is more reliable than NEC, please recommend. |
