Choosing windows or Linux server

At the time of purchasing a hosting as first you have to choose the platform of the hosting like Windows and Linux. Generally Linux Hosting is far cheaper then Windows. but this is completely dependent on your website development if your site is built using ASP then you have to choose windows server and using PHP then you have to choose Linux server. Many windows server supports Linux also for this you have to read their manual or package includes.
What is your opinion?

Not true at all, linux and windows hosting varies very little in terms of price.

Again not true, php runs on many platforms including windows. Current ASP does need Windows to run.

Say what? Do you mean a windows machine running VMWARE or something similar?

Yes, that last statement was incorect. I wanted to say, "Many windows server supports PHP also"...
But I prefer Linux, because is open source and multi-user system and it has been considered as the best OS for Web servers. It is the most reliable, customizable, secured, stable and efficient system used for the Web. Also linux has better uptime then windows but the number of features are more in windows.

While I too prefer unix/linux webservers over windows, I don't think windows is all that bad. I've been running WIN2k3 on two servers since last fall and havn't had any problems at all. Not one virus, crash, no stability problems. Windows is very much a multi user system. Simply bashing windows for a server when you know little about it is stupid. You may be confusing a home based windows OS with their server offerings.

You can also run ASP on linux platforms if you're using apache. You need mod_mono »www.apacheworld.org/modmono/

I haven't used it myself but my understanding is it's not 100% like ASP.net on a windows server. Plus most hosts don't run it so it be more for someone with a dedicated servers.
