| reply to MrTudo Re: Mediacom Pensacola Fl area opinions please!
Thanks openbox,
We spent a lot of money going back and forth to western north carolina looking to relocate. Between the poor high speed cable availability there ( and what was available was almost laughable) along with other issues we decided to stop looking there.
So we started looking in areas that had Comcast as we've had great experiences with this company and that led us to a place called Peachtree City/Fayetteville Georgia. We're still undecided about that but will make a decision this week.
Someone suggested looking up in the panhandle so I did, at least on the internet and stumbled across Gulf Breeze, Milton and Navarre as being places in our price range ( under 300K ). Next step was cenus.gov and then look at the viability of internet. So here I am.
One of the great parts of Fla is the lack of state income taxes which in our case would amount to more than 10K a year that a state like Georgia would extort from us just for the "pleasure' of living there. Florida doesn't have that and so we'd like to stay in Fla but it's just gotten unreasonable in terms of what you get for your money in South Fla. Hence the adventure in looking elsewhere. 10 G's a year is a lot of money and I'd personally rather burn it than give it up like that.
Some questions about where you live. Didn't that area become a major spring break place after we ran the breakers out of Lauderdale??
Do you know anything about Milton and it's internet availability?
By the way, we live in Port Charlotte and were in the walk in closet of the master bedroom when Charley came rolling thru, cat 4, 145mph winds gusting to over 180 and the eye was right in the neighborhood. Soon as we had electric we had internet with Comcast. That was pretty awesome.
Some questions are wildly off topic and I apologize to the mods and readers. It may seem strange to some how we are almost basing our moving criteria around the internet but it's how we make our living, so it's right up there in importance.

The Gulf Breeze/Navarre area is still in the pre-vacation hotspot mode. Things are beginning to build up, but so far, the vacation area is mainly about 20 miles east in Destin. I fully except this area to turn into a tourist area in another 4 or 5 years.

I believe that was the case with DSL, but my experience with Mediacom is that the service was intermittent at best, with several continuous hours of downtime.

Honestly, if you seriously make a living off the Internet and you require serious dependability, I would recommend going with Bellsouth's overpriced DSL (personally don't have experience with the service, but have heard decent things) or lease an SDSL circuit with an SLA from somewhere. I personally wouldn't place my business' future in Mediacom's hands. | |
