| Re: [General] The new PAP2 v2.0said by PAP2 guy :
Can any of you guys involved in the unlocking process say whether or not the 2.0 is better than the original PAP2? I might pick one up if it's better and unlockable. It is YMMV. AFAIC, a PAP2 v2.0 is far much better than an original PAP2 in the sense it is based on a TI AR7 chipset, runs on a Linux OS, and has more Flash/RAM (8/16MB) to run other applications, i.e. asterisk. The 8MB Flash is split into two parts evenly to host a current and a backup firmware as seen here:
# cat /proc/mtd dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 00318000 00010000 "root" mtd1: 00078000 00010000 "RESERVED_PRIMARY_KERNEL" mtd2: 00318000 00010000 "RESERVED_PRIMARY_ROOT_FS" mtd3: 003d0000 00010000 "RESERVED_PRIMARY_IMAGE" mtd4: 003d0000 00010000 "RESERVED_SECONDARY_IMAGE" mtd5: 00010000 00010000 "RESERVED_PRIMARY_XML_CONFIG" mtd6: 00010000 00010000 "RESERVED_SECONDARY_XML_CONFIG" mtd7: 00010000 00002000 "RESERVED_BOOTLOADER" mtd8: 00010000 00010000 "cyt_private" So, each firmware must be smaller than 4MB in size. So far, I have managed to port this little Fobbit phone-book server (about 50KB) to run on my PAP2 v2.0 to serve my VoIPBlaster devices. AFAIK, there seems to be a way to squeeze out at least 800KB space and I believe this is more than what we need to host an asterisk package (without asterisk sounds and VM). To give you some ideas, just see the package list of this OpenWRT WhiteRussian RC5 release.
The downside of having a PAP2 v2,0 based on my observations peeking through its web menu GUI is:
1. It has a lot less features to offer when compared to its predecessor. This may sound good to some people (less things to configure), but not to some of us (who prefer to tweak).
2. No STUN/Outbound proxy options support. As of now, I am still having some little problems to configure my PAP2 v2.0 to register to my trixbox within the same private LAN, let alone trying to register to a real VoSP outside my LAN.
3. There is a support for a SIP Registrar Address server option. I don't know if this is a replacement to the STUN and/or Outbound Proxy options.
Despite all the above pros/cons, I still prefer to have a PAP2 v2.0 than an ordinary PAP2, YMMV. Right now, local BestBuy (BB) stores still run some promo on this PAP2, PAP2 v2.0, and SPA-2002-ER for US$59.99 with a US$25 instant Gift Card. Then, you can use this US$25 GC to purchase the subsequent ATA devices for about $35. I got mine for about $10/each when BB had a different promo with a US$50 GC last month. If you have a Fry's Electronics store nearby, it currently sells the same units for about US$49.99. May be BB will allow you to PM to Fry's to bring down the price.
BTW, I hope some of the PAP2T owners can start open up a new thread to discuss about their PAP2T (a.k.a PAP2 v3.0) to compare. So far, information on a PAP2T is pretty sketchy.
