[Cable] Prolog (PTD) Network Upgrade

Prolog, which is the ISP used by many smaller cable companies in Central and Eastern PA (including Service Electric, which provides my parents with service) - had a story in their July newsletter about a new network they are building and expect to complete by the end of 2007. Here are some snips from the newsletter. Pretty interesting considering their size.

"Since 2004, PenTeleData has been investing in and building a new network to replace our existing ATM network. The existing network has a 'speed limit' of 622 megabits per second (Mbps) and is over 10 years old now, but the new network will have speeds up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps)-now that's fast!

The new network is projected to be complete in late 2007-that's only a little over a year away-and with speeds up to 10 Gbps, it's more than 16 times faster than our current network.

But, instead of giving you a technical look at our network, we thought it best to describe what its capabilities will be in terms of some fun facts and statistics:

The largest library in the world, the Library of Congress, with more than 18 million books, 2.5 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.5 million maps, and 54 million manuscripts could be transferred by our new network in just under an hour and a half!
A full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica (114 books) could be transferred 5 times in one second! (In 1997, Internet2-superfast Internet could transfer a 30 volume set in 1 second)
You're probably wondering what this all means for you, as a PenTeleData customer. Our commercial customers will benefit by having increased speed capabilities for their own connections to the PenTeleData network (and therefore to and from multiple locations for larger businesses or organizations). Our residential customers will benefit from the newer technologies that will be possible in the future.

Aside from the obvious speed increase, this new network we're building will allow for even greater future growth both for PenTeleData and all of our customers-from the largest commercial customers to residential customers.

By investing in this new network PenTeleData is making a commitment to our customers to continue to provide the latest technology and services available for you, our valued customers."

It would be nice if they said what the new speeds would be. SECTV's Internet speeds are among the slowest in the country when it comes to cable (especially in the NJ/PA/NY/CT area). Hopefully they will start offering speeds competitive to other regional cable companies or Verizon's FiOS.

That's a good piece of infor there JeepMatt. I wonder if ProLog will stop capping the usage or at least raise it? When I contracted for SECV, they only allowed 20Gs/month. That's the lowest I had ever heard of.

But this is cool. The platinum service right now in Birdsboro, Sunbury, and Hazleton, which is 5/512, would be awesome with that kind of network. Maybe the 16/1 that everyone is drooling for. . .

Our branch of Service Electric out of Mahanoy City offers 8Mbps in PA and NJ. It all depends on where you live.

It's kind of confusing, but Service Electric is actually two different companies.

There is Service Electric Cablevision (SECV), which franchises are located in Sunbury, Hazleton, and Birdsboro. This is the one I used to contract for.

There is Service Electric Cable TV (SECTV), which I am not sure everywhere they serve.

They are completely different companies.

They have no real ties to each other. I am not even sure of the history behind it. But I know that SECV all have the same digital and internet packages in Sunbury and Hazleton. Of course, in the Birdsboro system, there are some areas that aren't 2way yet, and their digital lineup is different, but the internet packages are the same.

It's weird though. They use the same logo, but operate independently.

Now, the one that serves Mahanoy City is actually Service Electric Company, which is a subsidiary of SECTV, but still not related to SECV. Confused yet?

If you live in Mahanoy City and move to Sunbury, the Sunbury system will consider you a new customer, not a transfer. They would have no record of you being a Service Electric Customer. But if you move from Sunbury to either Hazleton or Birdsboro, you are a transfer. My head hurts just trying to explain it.

Make that 3 companies.

Service Electric Company
Service Electric Cablevision
Service Electric Cable TV & Communications

All 3 are totally managed and owned separately.

Wow is that confusing. I always wondered why I couldn't get the Service Electric Lehigh Valley lineup at the same website I get the Birdsboro, Sunbury, Hazelton lineups. A college roommate who lives in Bloomsburg has Service Electric Cable. Not sure which one though. I hear Service Electric was the first CATV system around, is this true? Started back in the 1940's. Which one of these Service Electric companies is a derivative of the original CATV company? I can't believe they all use the same exact logo and are 3 different companies.

Back to the PTD Topic, Blue Ridge Cable also uses PTD.net as their Cable ISP Carrier.

Here is the pricing page for the Blue Ridge system I use when up at the future in-laws:
(zip code 18428)

They have a G10 Service which is 10Meg down / 800k up.
Also is a G7 Service (7M down / 800k up)
G3 Service (3M / 256k)
and a web surfer (lite package) 256k/112k

Bloomsburg is part of the Sunbury system. Hazleton, Birdsboro, and Sunbury are SE Cablevison. As far as I know they are the original derivative of the first cable system.

I'm not at all sure that is true. They refer to themselves as "sister companies" and thus, I am sure, related somehow.

They even use precisely the same logo, which would be copyright infringement if they didn't have some legal ties to each other.

I am a new user of SECTV referred PenTeleData. I have to say this one way cable is, speed-wise anyway, a wonderful throw back to something from the early 90's. Interesting, but not as usable as I like.

I am a retired gentleman. Being retired is pretty cool, but leaves one with all sorts of time to kill. I have become something of online gamer. I don't need to tell anyone what V52 up stream through-puts does for [or against] playing Madden or AOE3, etc, online.

I've been told by SECTV's Mr. John T. that two way service can be expected in this area around the end of September. That's good news.

I do have to admit I am horribly spoiled though. I am a former Optimum Online customer and was getting 800MBytes/sec before their upgrades, which took it to 1500MBytes/sec. [that's bytes, not bits]

I'm not expecting those kinds of speeds from a PenTeleData product. Maybe not even in the same "neighborhood", but in the same "city" would be nice. As would less talk about these bandwidth caps I keep hearing about.

The new two way service from SECTV is certainly an improvement, but I am still disappointed overall.

I know I am spoiled, having gotten use to Optimum Online service at real speed values of 13,000kbs downstream and 1900kbs upstream [see tests located here in the 07087 zip code for verification], but my current speeds seem dismal by comparison. 5000kbs downstream and 370kps up, even after optimizing the MTU and RWIN for their packets.

Those upstream numbers aren't going to do my online gaming any good, and my PalTalk and MSMessenger cam chats with my family members around the country... fagetaboutit.

my mom lives in the heights of wilkes-barre, and just within the past two years they got their 2 way system finally working....who knows how long for anything else in her area, but as was said before, I guess its not always good to be the first....
