When doing a line packet loss test there is one router that shows packetloss. The IP of that router is 12.118.120.22. See resulter here --> »/quality/nil/2075613

|
Vamp 5c077 Premium join:2003-01-28 MD | Actually, there really is something wrong there, even the destination shows loss, and ping goes up to 300ms at that hop. |
|
K Patterson Premium,MVM join:2006-03-12 Columbus, OH | Right you are! I didn't look at the latencies. My apologies.
Most likely an overloaded circuit between the last att router and the first Comcast router, whose incoming port is 12.118.120.22. |

prestonlewis Premium,MVM join:2003-04-13 Sacramento, CA | reply to invid Yes, it look nasty from here, too. Goes from an average of 81ms round trip on the hop before it to 186ms average at the 12.118.120.22 hop (from Sacramento, CA). |

@comcast.net | 12.118.120.21 is also looking nasty. My ping jumps to over 200ms. |

| Actually, it needs to be reported to Comcast. It is a comcast router.
Now, before everybody jumps and screams - the IP addresses shown in trace routes are the addresses of ports, not routers. A port on a router that is connected to a circuit between two ISP's has to have an IP in the same subnet on both ends. That means that either Comcast has to assign an att IP to their port or att has to assign a Comcast IP to theirs. The practice at Comcast is to assign an att IP. Because they don't have access to maintain the rDNS, the rDNS is blank. |

| reply to invid I reported already
I am in Charleston SC and have the same problem. Latency is fine until I get to 12.118.120.21, then I double or triple.
The tech I spoke to said that he had already "escalated a call to the national tech level" because he'd had 3 calls about it, but he also said that it was AT&T hardware. Maybe as a local tech he didn't know what the penultimate poster knows... hope they fix it. It's mighty hard to pwn some n00bs when I'm pinging like I'm in Swaziland. |

Im in Charleston, South Carolina too. I live in Mount Pleasant. These past four days my latency has been very high. My latency or ping has been excellent this whole past year. I'm going tommorow to get a new modem. I hope it works. |

| reply to invid Wow... IT IS EASY TO GET INFO!!!
I just called and spoke with a tech at AT&T who asked if I was from Comcast (and of course I said yes, because technically I am from Comcast, just on the customer side)... I mentioned that a number of people have shown high latency at 12.118.120.21. Really, I'm amazed that he asked... "You're from Comcast, right?" Wow.... Anyway...
He said that the pipe was 85% maxed, and that anything over 80% is going to lead to latency and dropped packets etc.
Guess we can now redirect our ire at Comcast and tell them to fix or upgrade their service. |

....and I just spoke with a Comcast lady (Lynn) who informed me that tehy have in fact escalated the call to the national level, and that this has been going on for 5+ dyas, and that they think it is ridiculous that the problem has lasted this long. Hope they get things fixed soon. |

| reply to invid Well i'm stoping by the comcast office in the morning to chew some (insert obvious body part here)!!! I plan on walking out of there with 1 months worth of internet service free. I suggest all you other charleston people do the same. The more money the lose the quicker they'll snap into action.
On another note, do any of you play BF2? |

That was 5 days ago and it hasn't changed. I talked to AT&T last night (Sunday around 11) and they said there were no open tickets having to do with the problems. Called Comcast and they want to send a tech to my hosue to fix something that's in Atlanta or so.
Hopefully this'll get resolved soon. |

| reply to invid it's POSSIBLY a bad router...
Routers can be set up so that when they get busy they start using a priarity list... ICMP type 1 (or ping) packets normally go to the bottom of that list while tcp port 80 (or web traffic)will be up at the top.
The packets on the bottom of the list will either be much slower or will just be dropped...
So it may not be a 'bad' router, it may just be a 'busy' router... or possibly a misconfigured router. |
|
K Patterson Premium,MVM join:2006-03-12 Columbus, OH | Or, it is an overloaded circuit as Amishboy reported.
The bad news is that fixing overloads involves a commitment by both att and Comcast, not to mention money, which means approvals, etc. They tend to not be fixed very quickly. |

join:2003-01-07 Charleston, SC | that's why i urge all comcast customers in the charleston area to demand compensation for this problem. we pay good money for a service that is reliable and consistent. this problem should be coming out of Comcast's pocket...not ours!!!! |
