Remote Reading of Screen

Very odd!! My daughter tells me everything I see on the monitor screen of our new computer.
How in the world can she tell me the contents of the screen when she's there in the
other room? Even when i'm not online! She says its a trick that she learned, but she won't
tell me how she does it or who she picked it up from. Just looked at the latest phone bill,
and no suspicious calls etc. No holes in the wall or roof either. Next step is bugging her
room.. LOL

Probably something she picked up from her dad, but it bothers me that she keeps secrets
after exposing that she knows this oddity. If she can do this in our apartment, i'm
thinking others could do the same from other apartments. This would be very insecure when
attempting any online transaction. This has been eating at me for a few weeks.
I would like to be certain that no one else is invading our security and privacy.
I would think that if readers know what's going on, that they would be hesitant to
respond, but i'm giving it a shot. What is she doing that allows her to see the screen?

Eagerly awaiting all responses.

I'm thinking there is a "keylogger" or a similar program installed on the new computer that was installed by either your husband or daughter for fun (no malicious intent).

Try pulling out the ethernet wire and tell her to try reading your screen (Then, of course, plug it back in after a good laugh)

@cox.net
WRONG!! Not a keylogger! This happens with no internet connection

You could still be connected to your network even if you have no Internet Connection.

Do you have any antivirus software installed?

I assume the computers are both hooked to a router, or have some access to each other through an intranet?

If both computers have Windows XP, it's most likely the "Remote desktop connection" feature of XP.

KyeU,
I have no network at all. Thats what I don't understand. Both standalone PCs. Her laptop
has no connection unless she plugs in the caple in the livingroom.

dellsweig,
what does a 'VNC' do? If it's network dependant, I don't think that would be the problem.
I'm not sure, but I do know that the PCs are not connected.

Interceptor,
there is no routers connected to the PC or laptop. No intranet hookup is
involved. Both PCs run XP home edition. Not sure if Remote Desktop could run under these
conditions. I came accross soething the other day and your nickname reminds me of what I
read. There was mention of a device called a video interceptor which seemed to allude to
the very problem of intercepting video. I read a bit on that, but I know my daughter
wouldn't have the resources for such a device.

More ideas

The Remote Desktop won't work unless there is some type of connection between the computers. In order to work, both need to be able to connect to the internet, or an intranet, either wired or wireless.

Your computer doesn't have a TV-card does it? Or, does your computer's video card have a separate video out? It might be one of these, but she would have to have hidden a cable between the two. Either that, or have access to a wireless transmitter. In this instance, she could conceivably be viewing what's on your screen, on a TV in her room, if she has one.

Interceptor,
this computer has a TV-Card installed! But there is no cable between the two PCs. The
monitor is a Sony flatscreen compatible with both PC and TV. Could this be the problem.
Any yes she has a cableless TV in her bedroom.
You mention that if she has access to a wireless transmitter she could possibly view whats
on the screen.. How? Would my monitor act as a receiver for that transmitter. Her dad setup
the TV in her room for better reception. Tell me more..

Is she just telling you generic stuff. Like, "there's an email program open" etc.. etc?... Maybe she just hears the programs opening and knows what they look like. Maybe she's trained by the U.S. Govt in remote viewing..... Maybe she's an alien...hmmm. Very interesting. Seriously there is no way to do this if there is absolutely no connection... wired, wireless, wi-fi....

Easy to find out. Pretend like you are using the PC, and go spy on her.

amysheehan,
could the presence of unsecured WiFi's allow a non-networked PC to view the monitor screen
of another non-network connected PC? How could this be?

I've seen almost the exact same thread a couple times here at BBR :

Help, my [friend, sister,GF] can see everything on my computer monitor, She has a [friend, relative] who is a network engineer [or something like that] who showed her how to do this, but she won't tell me.

Each thread died out with nothing resolved or [I think in 1 case] was locked. I would, too, like to know how this is done.

rogle,
NO! She simply shouts out that i'm 'on that site again' or when she's angry she tells me
precisely what i'm working on on the PC..reading line for line out loud. In essence she
does it in spite, and seems to joy at keeping the secret from me.
You say there's no way, but she does it! YOU are SOOO WRONG!
Interceptor made an interesting poing on the TV-Card, so i'm looking further into that.

Nymostwanted,
i'm looking into the idea of somehow placing a bug. But it might be immoral placing on in
her bedroom, so i'll need to look at other avenues.

boogi man,
no mirrors in front of the monitor, and the screen cannot be read with naked eye unless
directly in front of the monitor.

interesting

richk_1957,
well, i've posted several responses to previous posters, but many have not shown up on BBR.
I hope things continue until a solution can be seen here? I've responded several times, and
each time since post 2006-08-19 14:15:52, say the post is que'd(sp)

I think you can find out what's on other peoples computers by reading the astrology columns in your local newspaper.

How about ...

Take the computer away from her and don't give it back until she shows you how she's doing it.
