Could be your onboard sound coupled w/the CPU.

On my kid's old PC (celeron 1.0 Ghz) I couldn't get a 3d driving game (Hotwheels Velocity X) to play at even a bearable level until I disabled the onboard sound and put a basic/low-end sound card in the system.

The same game however, works fine w/onboard sound in their new PC (celeron 805D).
